Justin Bieber, Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin: Read a New Book month recommendations
While often overshadowed by the holiday season, December is observed as national read a new book month. As you finish up gift shopping, why not pick up a new read for yourself or a loved one?
To help you choose a title, we've compiled a list of classic celebrity favorites as well as a few new releases from celeb authors.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald: This classic American novel is set on Long Island in the 1920s following World War I. It tells the story of wealth, love, betrayal and prohibition. This imagining of the American dream is a favorite of actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis: Long before the film franchise, there were seven books. The most famous titled "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." The stories feature children who stumble upon the fictional realm of Narnia, where animals speak and magic is commonplace, and become heroes. Nicole Kidman is a fan of the series.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee: This Pulitzer Price winning novel has become a modern American classic. Dealing with racial inequality, class and loss of innocence in the deep south, the characters in this story provide a moral compass which many readers aim to follow. "This is a great story about facing life's difficulties and moving on, no matter what," says Alec Baldwin.
Vlad the Impaler: In search of the Real Dracula by M.J. Trow: Maybe take a break from reading "Breaking Dawn" for the 8th time and check out Angelina Jolie's favorite vampire. Be warned, this story doesn't feature a friendly, romantic bloodsucker. It is based on 15th century torturer Vlad the Impaler, and the many myths surrounding his life. Based on Jolie's apparent fascination with blood, we are not at all surprised this is her top pick. It does sound interesting none-the-less.
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho: Originally written in Portuguese, this publication has been translated into 67 languages and is one of the best-selling books in history. Will Smith loves this uplifting tale about a boy following his dreams, and turning them into achievement.
If you're looking for something a little more star-powered, here are a few recently released titles from Hollywood
First Step 2 Forever by Justin Bieber: Before "Never Say Never 3D" hits theaters in February, you can beef up your JB knowledge with this story of his road from everyday kid to teen sensation.
Unbearable Lightness by Portia de Rossi: For something a little more serious, try Portia's autobiography. In it she recounts her struggle with weight and eating disorders through the 90's, as well as her relationship with wife Ellen DeGeneres.
Me by Ricky Martin: From Menudo to "Livin' La Vida Loca," Ricky Martin had all but disappeared from the public eye. That is until recently when he shocked the world by opening up about his homosexuality. In this memoir, he recounts everything in-between.
