Don Meredith of Dallas Cowboys and 'Monday Night Football' dies at 72

One of the sports greats has passed. Don Meredith a sports star on and off the field has died at the age of 72.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback passed away Sunday, Dec. 5, after suffering a brain hemorrhage and then lapsing into a coma, reports the AP.

His wife Susan and daughter were by his side when he died in santa Fe. A private graveside service is planned.

Among Cowboys fans, Meredith is known for his outgoing nature and grit on the field from 1960-1968. In his post-football career, he became a color commentator for "Monday Night Football."

His style was folksy, and was known for singing, "Turn out the lights, the party's over" if the outcome of a game was a foregone conclusion.

One of his most famous quotes: "If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts, wouldn't it be a merry Christmas?"
