Thanksgiving box office: 'Tangled' can't whip its hair past 'Potter' [Updated]

tangled-frying-pan.jpgUPDATED with Friday results after the jump. Disney's "Tangled" is off to a very strong start at the box office for the Thanksgiving holiday, but it doesn't look like anything will dethrone a certain young wizard this weekend.

Oh, and the other three movies that opened Wednesday (Nov. 24)? Not much to see here.

FRIDAY RESULTS: "Tangled" continued to beat forecasts in a big way on Friday, earning an estimated $19.7 million to bring its total just shy of $40 million -- which is what predictions had it making for the five-day Thanksgiving period. It's now expected to make as much as $70 million by the end of Sunday.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I" continued to lead the way with a $20.8 million take on Friday. Two other holdovers, "Megamind" ($5.4 million) and "Unstoppable" ($4.6 million), finished third and fourth.

The weekend's other new releases all improved on Friday, but they're still pretty soft. "Burlesque" made an estimated $4.5 million, "Love and Other Drugs" $3.8 million and "Faster" $3.2 million.

Original post is below.

"Tangled" made an estimated $19.9 million in its first two days of release, which puts it on pace for a five-day opening in the $60 million range. That's way above the pre-release forecasts of $40 million or so.

Sixty million dollars is nothing to be sad about, but Disney's movie won't be able to catch "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I." Last week's box-office champ is set to repeat this weekend, having raked in an additional $26.5 million Wednesday and Thursday. It could end up with $80 million for the five-day period and will certainly break the $200 million mark in domestic receipts by Sunday.

"Deathly Hallows" and "Tangled" together put a serious hurting on the three other movies that opened wide for Thanksgiving weekend. None of them -- "Burlesque," "Love and Other Drugs" and "Faster" -- has made any real dent in the box office. "Burlesque" has been the best of the three so far, pulling in $5.3 million in its first two days. "Love and Other Drugs" is at an estimated $4.1 million, while "Faster" has taken in $3.5 million so far.

"Faster" at least grew from Wednesday to Thursday, which the other two movies didn't do.

I saw Love & Other Drugs last night and I absolutely loved it. I'm not sure why it got such bad reviews. All the naked Jake Gyllenhaal made it even nicer.

LOAOD and burleque failed miserably, but I could have warned them. From horrible casting to trannies on parade what did they expect.

It was a cross between Glitter and Nine, yes that awful. Cher should have stayed retired with at least her dignity as an actress.
