Demi Lovato's parents issue statement, Joe Jonas and Ashley Greene get Twitter backlash
Disney darling Demi Lovato shocked fans on Monday when it was announced that she had left her world tour in order to seek treatment for "emotional and physical" issues that had plagued her for some time. The story has continued to develop, and sources close to the tour now say that Lovato was spurred to seek help after getting into a physical altercation with a female tour member. According to the source, Lovato was partying with friends and believed the other girl told on her to her stepfather.
"Afterwards, Demi felt awful about her behavior and realized she needed to take personal responsibility for it," says the source. "Because of this, and because of the battles Demi has fought throughout her life, both she and her family realized she needed to take steps to get help immediately."
Since the confirmation, rumors have swirled that Lovato's emotional problems stemmed largely from her breakup with Joe Jonas, who she continued to tour with. Jonas's new girlfriend, "Twilight's" Ashley Greene, has also joined the tour for several dates, causing fans to speculate that Lovato's altercation was with Greene.
Greene's reps issued the following statement: "There was never an issue between Ashley and Demi, and there is no truth to any rumors about a conflict." Still, it hasn't kept fans from lashing out at Jonas and Greene via Twitter.
"Joe, being a best friend to demi, dated or "played" with her, dumbed her, forgot about her, dating Ashley. Thank you @JoeJonas," wrote one fan. Another tweeted, "Hey @AshleyMGreene? You have a lot of nerve to post on twitter acting as if nothing is happening. You're the reason for Demi's breakdown, we all know that. Emotional abuse from you, and your friends. You are lower than a snake on the ground."
Ouch.
We're not sure what fans are expecting, as it could seem highly inappropriate for Jonas or Greene to tweet about Lovato's personal issues.
Meanwhile, Lovato's parents have issued a brief thank-you to fans for their support. "Our entire family appreciates the outpouring of support we have received from Demi's fans," Eddie and Dianna De La Garza tell People. "We are touched by their kindness."
