Chilean Miner Edison Peña goes on Letterman, sings Elvis, runs New York Marathon

chilean-miner.jpgIf the world had any idea how charming the Chilean miners were, you better believe they wouldn't have been down there for 69 days.

Miner Edison Peña appeared on the Nov. 4 broadcast of "The Late Show With David Letterman," and though he does not speak English, that didn't stop him from telling hilarious stories and breaking into song.

"I don't know anything about mines," Letterman confesses at the start of the interview, before asking what exactly what Peña thought of his job.

"The first time I walked into a mine, I wanted to turn around and get out, but that wasn't really an option," Peña says, with the help of a translator (who, by the way, does not do his sound effects justice). "So I just kept going deeper and deeper in the mine, and I kept saying, 'couldn't we just turn around?' But it didn't work out that way."

Peña says he'd only been mining for a few months before the accident trapped him down there -- but it wasn't all in vain. He ran up to six miles a day in those mines, and because of all that training, he'll run in Nov. 7 New York City Marathon.

If you aren't already sold on him, there's more. Though he doesn't speak English, he did manage to sing a bit of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" -- which includes situation-appropriate lyrics like "We're caught in a trap" and "I can't walk out."

We think we're in love.
