Black Eyed Peas land Super Bowl halftime show: Justin Bieber wasn't available?
The Super Bowl is going (relatively) youthful for its musical entertainment. The Black Eyed Peas will rock the XLV Super Bowl halftime show at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, reports the Dallas Morning News. Considering the past five years of halftime show history, these 30-somethings are young.
In the past, multi-generational artists took on the task of entertaining, allowing an appeal to both the younger and older audience. Since 2005, however, the programming has been sticking mainly with classic performers well over 40, some even qualifying for Social Security.
A look back at the halftime show musicians and performers in the 2000s:
2000 - Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton; Edward James Olmos
2001 - Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Mry J. Blige, Nelly
2002 - U2
2003 - Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting
2004 - Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, Justin Timberlake
2005 - Paul McCartney
2006 - The Rolling Stones
2007 - Prince
2008 - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
2009 - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2010 - The Who
Although we love the classic rockers, we're relieved to see the Super Bowl change it up. Also, we hate to admit it, but watching Pete Townshend last year, we were afraid he was going to break his hip, not his guitar on stage.
The Peas -- comprising will.i.am, and vocalists apl.de.ap, Taboo, and Fergie -- are the first urban/hip-hop act since the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" duo of '04.
We're hoping that this isn't the last musical act announced for XLV though. There's still time to add people, and there's the national anthem to think about.
We think country probably deserves its time in the sun again, and it couldn't hurt to have someone younger added to the mix. In the era of Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, each member of the Peas is easily double the age of the teen sensations. Sorry Bieber fans, we'd vote for T-Swizzle. She probably has a stronger appeal to the Super Bowl audience than Biebs.
Are you cool with the Peas? Who'd you prefer?
[UPDATE: Pete Frampton was previously attributed with the bad hip, but it was Pete Townshend with The Who, who played in 2010's Super Bowl. Apologies to both Petes.]

You have your classic rockers mixed up.It's Pete Townshend, not Peter Frampton. And as for The Black-Eyed Peas-I will be skipping their performance.
That's Pete Townshend,not Peter Frampton
I like this choice. Now I can do other things at halftime and not feel like I missed something.
Sorry for the double post.
I remember the 2001 show it was pretty awesome.
I also remember the 2001 show fondly. It was great! Only Britney Spears could rock a tube sock on her arm as a glove and make it look fashionable. I saw BEP in 2003 when they opened for Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. I thought they were great live performers.
Should be Prince every year.
Seriously, who's next - Smash Mouth?
This is getting extremely old. In fact, We need/want to see more energizing halftime shows that will pump us up even further, especially since it's football and is all about hitting.
Here's a suggestion - how about a mixture of Deadmau5, Deftones, Nas and maybe a heavy side to Taylor Swift going nuts on stage. Now, that my friends is a halftime show worthy of checking out.
Black Eyed Peas? Seriously!?!? Ugh... We had them perform at the Grey Cup (Super Bowl for Canada) half-time show a couple years back, and it was just terrible. They sung "My Lumps". Think of target audience for football: Men.
What kind of a man likes Black Eyed Peas? I'll you this much: not the kind of man who would be watching football in the first place.
the reasons the musical acts for the super bowl halftime show got 'old' after 2004 was because of the 'nipplegate' scandal with Janet Jackson. now it appears some risks are being taken again. I highly doubt Fergie is going to be flashing us. Its time for some more relevant musical acts. NOT saying the Peas are, but as much as I like classic rock, its not really a Super Bowl type choice.
