MTV's TJ Lavin speaking, breathing and eating on his own

TJ-Lavin-MTV.jpgFollowing a terrible crash during a BMX event, MTV's "The Challenge" host TJ Lavin was put into a medically induced coma to protect against swelling in his brain. But Thursday (Oct. 22) his breathing and feeding tubes were removed and he has started responding to his family at his bedside.

According to People, he is answering questions and he is aware of his surroundings, even if he is not yet opening his eyes. The doctors don't expect brain damage from the crash, but Lavin will most likely need rehabilitation in order for his brain to return to normal.

There is no timetable on when he might be released from the hospital because in addition to the medically-induced coma, Lavin also needs surgery on his shattered wrist.

Lavin's business partner Chas Aday tells People, "We're moving along and everything is looking up."
