Jon Stewart decides not to pile on Rick Sanchez
UPDATE: Video of the "Daily Show" Sanchez segment is at the end of the post. One of the lessons learned from l'affaire Rick Sanchez at CNN? If you're going to make remarks ill-considered enough to get you fired from your cable-news job, do it at the end of a week.
Sanchez, you may have heard, was fired from CNN on Friday (Oct. 1) for calling "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart a bigot, among other things. Stewart made a joke about it Saturday at the taping of the "Night of Too Many Stars" autism benefit, and he then devoted several minutes of Monday's (Oct. 4) show to the subject. But if you tuned in looking for an all-out takedown, you might have gone away slightly disappointed.
The other late-night comics didn't have a huge amount to say about it either. David Letterman did a "Top 10 Rick Sanchez Excuses" list, but Jay Leno mostly left it alone. Stephen Colbert did jokes about World War I reparations to open his show.
Even Stewart himself didn't really go in for the kill. After acknowledging the news, and therefore the comedy potential, was a few days old, Stewart (with a graphic titled "Hurty Sanchez" next to him on screen) showed what he said was only part of a planned bit comparing Sanchez with Michael Scott from "The Office." He then took the high ground, noting that Sanchez had spoken out against racism on his show in the past and conceding that's probably a lot closer to what Sanchez actually believes than the broadsides that led to his firing.
Stewart then added that he hopes "this is a chance for all of us to get in touch not with our dirtier Sanchezes, but with our better Sanchezes." Because, yes, he couldn't not make the crude joke. It's what he does.
Both Letterman and Leno made fun of CNN's ratings in their Sanchez jokes. On "The Tonight Show," Leno noted that Sanchez made his comments on a satellite radio show, adding, "Had he said it on his own show on CNN, he wouldn't have been fired because no one would have heard it."
No. 9 on Letterman's list, meanwhile, was "Didn't think it was possible to get fired from a network no one watches." We also liked No. 6, "Always wanted to go back to doing weather in Zanesville, Ohio," and No. 4, "Trying to impress Mel Gibson."
For the most part, though, Sanchez got off pretty easy.

Rick is / was himself very far left as is most of CNN. Rick came to America from Cuba as a boy I think that influences his idea that anyone that makes it across the border should be given citizenship. Personally I don't understand this relationship we have with Cuba... We have a base there that houses Terrorists the country is under embargo and we allow anyone from cuba instant citizenship... its not right ... but thats not to say there aren't good people in Cuba ... there are good people everywhere but they need to make their own countries like America and not expect to take the easy way out and run here...
But Rick is not alone ... the far left will be racist and then label everyone else racist...
I volunteered for over ten years with a very well known charity that helped minorities... all of the volunteers were white and a good 80% were women... sure there were some people working off community service time but the Left Wing Activists never show up to help rebuild their own community... They are all about money and power and hate.
At the very least Rick was putting out that leftist mentality .. but then again most of CNN's on air staff is first generation American and far left.
Sanjay Gupta almost took a job as Surgeon General under Obama.
Roland Martin Soledad Obrien are both deep into black power socialism.
Donna Brazil works as a Democrat Party Leader yet she often pretends to be the republican side in on air debates.. how is that right?
And the former CEO of Time Warner was an Obama Economic Adviser then was appointed to Citi Bank after the Tarp Bailout..
The list goes on and on..
The fact is if you really look deep everyone at CNN has deep ties into the far far far left not just basic democratic ideas...
and that is wrong for a News Agency
THEY ARE PRAVDA
HockeyGuy, You really have a great post! I was going to write something, then I read your thoughts and you did such a thoughtful job that I believe you say it all.
It made me feel better when I read it. Thanks for making my day!!!

Most journalists have advanced degrees and according to a CNN poll:
the most highly educated 16% of voters were expected to vote Democrat even though most of their similarly high paid but lesser educated counterparts did not.
Now, you can say this is biased because it's a CNN poll but my personal experience says it is true as well. The higher you go into academia the more liberals you will find.
"Donna Brazil works as a Democrat Party Leader yet she often pretends to be the republican side in on air debates.. how is that right?"
this thing for sure i know is complete BS. dude, i've seen your posts before and i think you need your meds STAT. at the very least, you are full of bad info.
Any one of those a$$holes listed above is one rant or really bad joke away from being canned, I'm surprised Keith Olbermann & Bill Maher have lasted this long.
HockeyGuy - where's the hockey references????
"The higher you go into academia the more liberals you will find."
That's not surprising since liberal opinion tends to be more enlightened and the purpose of academia is enlightenment. How can you be against that?
The wonderful thing about Bill Maher is he possesses a combination of high intelligence and a broad span of knowledge, all wrapped up in a brilliant sense of humor that never fails to entertain.
I forgot to add that I like Jon Stewart, I think he's a class guy and my guess is that it would not be unlike him to call CNN and say "Look... I wasn't offended and understand Rick was just returning shots I took at him. I certainly don't want him fired on my behalf". I think that represents the Jon Stewart I see...
