ELLE's Joe Zee and 'The ELLEments of Personal Style': 'Break all the fashion rules'
ELLE magazine celebrates its 25 years of covering fashion with the recent release of its new book, "The ELLEments of Personal Style." The tome to fashion includes all original content covering 25 women from the world of fashion and entertainment, including "Glee's" Lea Michele, designer Diane Von Furstenberg and burlesque performer Dita Von Teese.
"What we did was sort of curate a handpicked group of 25 iconic women here in Hollywood and New York," ELLE creative director Joe Zee tells Zap2it. "Who represent the different aspects of what ELLE is and go behind the scenes with them, go into their homes, into their closets and really show some inside style secrets from them.
When we met up with Zee (who many of you will recognize from MTV's "The City") in L.A., he told us how the 25 icons in the book exemplify ELLE's point of view on personal style.
"We want women to embrace who they are personally," he says. "You're never a slave to a trend. We don't want you to rip a look off the runway and interpret it exactly the way as shown. Put it together your way!"
While there's much to learn from these style icons, Zee says the book emphasizes something he has known for a long time: The biggest rule of fashion is that there aren't any.
"I hate fashion rules," he says. "And I think the whole idea of rules in life are that they're supposed to be broken. So, break all the fashion rules."
"ELLEments of Personal Style" is available now at bookstores and online.
