'Dilemma' trailer pulled after Anderson Cooper criticizes 'gay' bomb
Anderson Cooper had a big problem with "The Dilemma" trailer.
He told Ellen DeGeneres Thursday (Oct 7) that he was horrified to see the trailer in a movie theater this weekend in which Vince Vaughn's character says "That's so gay."
"I was shocked that not only that they put it in the movie, but that they thought that it was okay to put that in a preview for the movie to get people to go and see it."
He finds those words unacceptable because they hurt kids. "Someone else I talked to recently said that the words people use and the things people say about other kids online, it enters into their internal dialogue."
According to The Wrap, Universal announced today that it has now removed the offending trailer and replaced it with a new one.
But a studio insider told Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke that they "showed the trailer to gay groups like GLAAD and gay executives here and gays in our marketing department and no one was offended and everyone had a positive response."
Not true, sez GLAAD, which has responded with their statement:
"Last month Universal shared a link to the trailer for the film 'The Dilemma' with GLAAD. After reviewing, GLAAD called on Universal to remove the scene where the word 'gay' was used as a pejorative from the trailer. Today, after Anderson Cooper also spoke out against the scene, Universal confirmed to GLAAD that the offensive joke will be removed from promotional campaigns from this point forward, including in the trailer currently playing in movie theatres.
"The use of the word 'gay' in this trailer as a slur is unnecessary and does nothing more than send a message of intolerance about our community to viewers," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.

Pity it took a goober like Anderson Cooper to point out the obvious. One would think that the gay-friendly Hollywood people would realize how blatantly offensive the phrase "That's so gay," when used as a synonym for "That's so stupid," is. This is not a matter of Cooper being overly-PC, either. The modern generation of youth have made this phrase what it is, and for the supposed grown-ups to not see it for the offensive line that it is just shows how out of touch people have gotten.
Anyway, good job by Cooper, even if I do think he's as much of a blowhard as Rick Sanchez.
Very happy it was removed. I also find the term, in that context, very offensive. Go Anderson!
Ellen is right about teaching a class to young children about COMPASSION. i have a friend who has been saying this for years as well, and i agree. Tyler's case is tragic, i really wish he hadn't killed himself. as for the movie, the trailer couldn't even hold my attention (not a good sign). and Queen Latifah basically ruins any movies for me anyway.
I cannot believe how clueless these movie execs. are. Are they all 12 yr. old boys sitting around the table farting and slamming gays? Vince Vaughn is getting too old to play these silly characters. I won't be seeing the film.
Then "Blazing Saddles" should be banned in all stores? You libs are so thin skinned we can see your kidneys!
Yeah people need to stop being so liberal about the whole gay thing. Those of you that believe in God but support gay behavior will not enter the kingdom of heaven. You people all need to read your bible.
Wait a second now Mr.Copper is suppose to report the news not make it. To me he is abusing his role as a news reporter to push his own agenda. If he wishes to generate the news then he should not be a reporter. This is as usual blown way out of proportion by one group wishing to push their own agenda and once again revise culture in a way they see fit. I've heard gay people use this exact word in the exact same manner, in this context it does not have a negative connotation to it. Adults need to grow up and stop being so sensitive. I find this humorous that adults are actually now more sensitive than children. Let's all walk on egg shells now so we don't have to risk offending any particular group with terms and phrases that do not relate to them. Since when were gay people associated with being stupid? Except perhaps Anderson, his delusions carries with it no reasonable association.
CNN has self destructed with their sooooo gay agenda.
Alex- "Blazing Saddles"- really?
Rob- You've taken God's place in deciding who goes to heaven? God probably wouldn't like that
Bamboozled- yeah, you probably shouldn't watch CNN any more
To the intelligent posters- one death is too many for any reason if it is the result of hate, racism and/or bigotry. Please keep reading and commenting and being aware- this has to stop. Even bigots and homophobes should agree with that.
What is the last line of the Flintstones TV show song?.....we'll have a gay old time.....
