Joaquin Phoenix returning to Letterman after bizarre 2009 appearance

When Joaquin Phoenix dropped by "The Late Show" in February 2009 to promote his... retirement, things got messy. The grumpy, taciturn and all-around spaced-out actor made David Letterman suffer through almost ten minutes of the most awkward talk show interaction ever captured. And now he's heading back for more.

CBS announced the (former) actor will drop by Wednesday, Sept. 22 for a rematch. The network's so excited about the episode, they're actually rebroadcasting Phoenix's 2009 appearance during the show's Sept. 16 airing.

Back in 2009, when Letterman asked Phoenix if he'd be returning to rap on the show, it seemed like an absurd prospect. Maybe we'll get a performance after all.

To relive every absurd moment, here's the 2009 interview:

Uh, Sep. 19 is a Sunday - I don't think CBS will be showing a Letterman episode on a Sunday.

I'll definitely watch it, but it was already revealed months ago that Letterman was in on the "joke" when Phoenix first appeared on his show. One of Letterman's long-time writers admitted to it during his retirement. Still funny though!

freakin brilliant

It's Jake and Elwood's long lost brother.
