ELLE on Gabourey Sidibe controversy: 'Nothing out of the ordinary was done'

gabby-sidibe-getty-elle.jpgThere has been online outcry over Gabourey Sidibe's cover of ELLE magazine for their 25th anniversary issue. The criticism has been over the alleged lightening of Gabby's skin and also that the heavier Sidibe was only shown from the chest up, while other svelter cover girls Lauren Conrad, Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried were all show in three-quarters length shots.

But a rep for the Oscar-nominated actress tells Access Hollywood that Sidibe is "absolutely thrilled to be on the cover of ELLE magazine's 25th anniversary issue." Which isn't exactly a response to the outcry, but OK.

And a rep for ELLE tells Access that Gabby's cover was treated the same as any other. "Nothing out of the ordinary was done. We have four separate covers this month and Gabby's cover was not retouched any more or less than the others. We had 25 cover worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is."

"We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world," adds the magazine's rep. "If you take a looks at the portfolio in its entirety, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reason."

Do you think ELLE's photo editors got a little carried away?

Seems like another example of people making something out of nothing. It's not news that the publishing world retouches and crops images to enhance the product's marketability.

It looks to me that it was the makeup and the lighting.

The sort of makeup that gives an ethereal glow to the skin and the lighting bounces right off.

I see no skin lightening here.

kanye is sooooooo ugly..

Her skin was evened out and the lighting is better. If Gabby is happy who are we to say it's bad?

As for the 3/4 vs face only, as a plus size woman myself, I'd prefer face only as well. Most women want to show off their best assets and hide those that they're not as confident in. Perhaps Gabby had some input?

I say she's beautiful.

I cosign with Lynn, its the lighting and I'm speaking as a black man. Depending on the lighting I can be really dark in pictures and really light in others. As for not showing a full-body shot, this shot is more flattering, I'll leave it at that!

god it's fine, get over it already!

She should have been on the cover of
HOUSE Magazine cause God knows she is as big as one!

What a bad message Elle has sent out.

I agree with the makeup and lighting statements. And I also agree that she looks beautiful. Especially the look on her face and shining in her eyes.

Has anyone noticed that almost all black people are this same orange as Gabby. Oprah,Beyonce now Gabby. They know what they are doing and I've been saying that if they are so proud to be black why do they allow themselves to be orange. Look at Oprah closely she is orange.

OMG JFMS777!! You are *hi-larious*!! "HOUSE magazine because God knows she is as big as one." I have *never* heard anything so original!! How long did it take you to come up with that? Genius, my friend, GENIUS!!
