Box Office: 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' wins, movie studios struggle

resident-evil-320.jpgThe fourth "Resident Evil" film easily won this weekend's box office... but initial estimates have over-all sales at a two-year low.

The weekend after Labor Day is typically slow for new releases. "Resident Evil's" $27.7 million haul amounted to more than the rest of the top five combined.

Notably, "Resident Evil: Afterlife" was released in 3-D, which offers a significant boost to the numbers. In second place is "Takers" with $6.1 million, followed by last week's #1, "The American," which brought in $5.8.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Machete" with $4.2 million and "Going the Distance" with $3.8 million.

The rest of the Top 12 was as follows: "The Other Guys" ($3.6 M) "The Last Exorcism" ($3.4 M) "The Expendables" ($3.2M), "Inception" ($3.0M), "Eat, Pray, Love" ($2.9M), "The Switch" ($2.0M) and "Nanny McPhee Returns" ($2.0M).

They're at a 2 year low because most of the flicks that came out this year sucked. I hope the movies comeing out during the holidays are better.

Eight words, Alex: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One!!!! Epic!!!

More importantly, movie attendance this year is down to what it was in the mid-1990s.

Well, for my two cents I tend not to go to the movies anymore because the films I want to see - like Resident Evil - are only available in 3-D in most places, and I don't enjoy 3-D films, so in the case of that film (as well as Alice, Despicable Me, Toy Story 3, and probably Harry Potter) I've chosen to wait for the 2-D Blu-Ray release rather than go to the theatre.

THE TOWN. Friday. Go See It

Hi, No wonder that Resident Evil won the box office race this weekend because there was nothing else to watch but that movie. I can't wait to see Harry Potter movie in Nov. too JettaJameson in 3-D too (heck I even pay the extra fee to see that in 3-D too). Plus back in the mid 1990's the movie tickets was a whole lot cheaper than it is now people can't afford the movie tickets now unless there is a movie out there that they really really want to see.

3D doesn't do much for me either. It's a gimmick that's already losing steam. It's just greedy movie companies trying to make money by charging more to convert crappy films to 3D. That seems to be the new rule. Made a sucky film? Just turn it into 3D! Recoup your losses.

ALICE ... RESIDENT EVIL 4 IN 3D ... A FOURTH INSTALLMENT FOR A 3 CHAPTER MOVIE. ... HMMM ... LET'S SEE HOW THIS RUNS AND HOW MUCH IT WOULD MAKE.

not really surprised of the 2 year low news.. VMAs+ NFL kickoff weekend throw in 9/11 and really not too many good movies in theaters... sure avatar was back in.. still would rather stay home given the choice and wait for the fall movies

At my local theater it costs $10.00 per person to get in. So I am out $20.00 getting my wife and I in. Then I spend $19.00 getting 2 large sodas and a large popcorn. Heaven forbid I want candy with that for an extra $5.00. $39.00 with no candy or 3d surcharge is just to much. You can usually buy the blu-ray for $19.99 adjust the volume or pause it if you need to. Or rent it for $3.50
