'Real L Word': Nikki, Jill talk Prop 8 overturn, upcoming wedding

Nikki and Jill, the lesbian couple who are planning their fall wedding on Showtime's "The Real L Word," could not be happier about this week's overturn of Prop 8, a prop that made same sex marriages illegal in California.

Nikki tells The Dish Rag exclusively, "We can't run out and get a marriage license right now. It still has to go to the Court of Appeals. But this is a huge, huge step and such a large victory."

They credit the two courageous couples who acted as plaintiffs in the case and opened up their lives to scrutiny to help the cause. Similarly, Nikki and Jill signed on to open up their lives on "Real L Word" in the hopes of changing misconceptions about lesbians.

"I hope our story puts a human and very real spin on the situation," says Jill. "We wanted to show two women whose lives will be positively affected because of same sex marriage.... I get to marry the woman of my dreams and have it be recognized legally."

Their first phone call was to "Real L Word" creator Ilene Chaiken. "Thank God for caller ID," says Nikki. "I was hysterically crying and she didn't know who it was."

They both celebrated last night with the rest of the "Real L Word" cast. And they are both blown away by the support from fans on their Facebook page.

"Our Facebook is off the charts, literally hundreds of messages," Nikki said. "It's so touching to see the international outpouring of well wishes we receive from fans . It makes this all worthwhile. One woman wrote, 'I now feel free enough to tell people who I am." 

Their wedding is still set for October and although they were supposed to pick out flowers yesterday, they got a little distracted. Nikki has already selected her gorgeous David Fielden gown. But you'll have to watch the show for the next two weeks to find out what Jill's going to wear.
