Portia de Rossi officially takes Ellen Degeneres' name

ellen-portia.jpgTwo years after their wedding, Portia de Rossi has filed to change her last name to match her wife, Ellen DeGeneres'. The couple married in August 2008, during the brief window when gay marriage was legal in California before Proposition 8 banned same-sex unions.

Perhaps Portia is making the change in celebration of Proposition 8 being deemed unconstitutional? On the legal documents obtained by TMZ, Portia petitions to change her name to Portia Lee James DeGeneres. The papers, filed in court last Friday, read, "Petitioner is taking the last name of her spouse."

Portia was born Amanda Lee Rogers, and changed her name to Portia de Rossi when she was just 15 years old. We're not sure where the "James" in her new name comes from, but it's certainly got a nice ring to it.

Weigh in, Zappers: Did you or will you take your spouses name if you marry?

I think it is a nice gesture to take your spouse's name. I did it once, but will never do it again...or the marrying part either.

An off topic comment, but the pictures from Ellen's and Portia's wedding are perhaps the most beautiful I've ever seen.

Her real name is Amanda Rodgers? Doesn't seem to fit at all. I like that she took Ellen's name. I would love to hear her explanation of all her non-marriage related name switching. Including the addition of James to her current moniker.
