Elisabeth Hasselbeck supports gay marriage, rains on fans' parade

elisabeth-hasselbeck-gay-marriage.jpg"The View" co-host often gets branded as the ultimate conservative -- mostly for sharing a panel with some very liberal ladies -- but Elisabeth Hasselbeck wants people to know that she doesn't see everything in black and white, even if it loses her a few supporters.

Case in point: gay marriage.

Many would believe the active Republican is opposed to extending marital rights to same-sex couples, but they would be wrong.

"I think the gay marriage thing would definitely surprise people," she tells Fancast. "I mean, for some people, it will surprise them to the point that they won't want to hear it. "No, that can't be, I really want to have this sort of idea of her in my head," so I sort of rain on their parade there."

And the rain may have already begun. Examiner reports that her recent comments have drawn public condemnations from anti-gay groups, going as far as calling her religion into question.

Don't plan on any backpedaling on Hasselbeck's part. She's never been one to back down from her opinions -- no matter where they fall on the political spectrum.

I'm a Republican (more for the anti-spending mentality than anything) and I'm all for gay marriage. I even go to church! Gay marriage is a Christian belief and I hate that ppl and churches (including my own) can't see that.

Wow, people can surprise you all the time. I would have been the first in line to say she was a opponent of same-sex marriage, and I guess I should be the first in line to say that I over-judged. Good for her for having her own opinion and sticking to it. Now, if we could just discuss the million other opinions she has that don't meld with mind, lol :P

So would this be considered a "Cafeteria Conservative"?

Stockholm syndrome....anyone

I wonder if there are any libs AGAINST gay marrige.

Well, I hate her a lot less now. I think she's secretly a liberal. Thank goodness there is some sanity in that brain of hers.

Re: keepitreal

Since when is gay marriage a Christian belief?

thank you J.A. for pointing out a position that is severely under-voiced!! much appreciated.

Gay marriage is accepted in many mainstream Christian denominations. We now have several officially ordained gay ministers and even a gay bishop. It's the nutty fundamentalists that give Christianity a bad name. They misinterpret biblical verses and take them out of context in order to slam homosexuality. Jesus loved everyone. He wouldn't have an "Adam and Steve" bumper sticker. Some Christians just don't get it. Many of them do.

I was delighted to hear that Elizabeth sees the goodness in gay/lesbian marriages. It definitely increases my respect for her. I think her "support" for gay marriage is indicative of a generation coming to terms with the ridiculousness of banning gay marriage. Yehhh Elizabeth.
