Roman Polanski is free! Swiss refuse U.S. extradition request
Director Roman Polanski is going home. And he's definitely not stopping in the United States on the way from Switzerland to France. Swiss officials threw out what they called a flawed request to extradite him to the U.S. for sentencing on a 33-year-old child sex charge, according to the AP.
The "Rosemary's Baby" and "Chinatown" director has been under house arrest since he was seized in Zurich last September. He was on his way to a film festival where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award for his film work.
U.S. authorities demanded the filmmaker be returned to the States to be sentenced for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

Swiss officials announced on Monday (July 12) that the extradition
has now been turned down -- because of a "fault" in the request.
A spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry says, "The reason for the decision lies in the fact that it was not possible to exclude with the necessary certainty a fault in the U.S. extraditionary request."
Polanski is expected to return to his family home in France.
