'Pretty Little Liars' Shay Mitchell on Emily's lesbian feelings

Before Shay Mitchell and the rest of the "Pretty Little Liars" cast got to meet their fans on Saturday (June 5) at the Barnes and Noble bookstore in The Grove, The Dish Rag had a chance to chat with her.

"I play Emily Fields," Shay told us, adding that sporty Emily is "the safest one in the group to tell your secrets to."

So what are Emily's secrets? "My character is dealing with her sexuality and coming to terms with whether she has feelings for boys or for girls."

On top of the usual teenage issues, it's a lot to handle. But Shay hopes that the portrayal of Emily will give teenage fans an opportunity to discuss simliar issues in their own lives with their parents.

"You can watch it with your family and hopefully, it makes this topic more comfortable for teens."

She raves about every episode looking like a one-hour movie and hopes that fans will enjoy their portrayals, despite the slight difference between the way the actresses look (hair color!) and the way their characters are described in the novels.

And if Shay can steal anything from Emily's closet, it's gonna be some sneakers and maybe a track suit. "I'm set for heels and dresses," she adds.
