Kanye West's BET Awards comeback performance: That was it?

Kanye West has been laying low since he made America's sweetheart, Taylor Swift, cry at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards... and for good reason. Even President Obama called him a "jack***" after that classy move. On June 27, West finally came out of hiding to open the BET Awards with his new single "Power," and even though it appears he left his offending bottle of Hennessy at home this time, he seriously underwhelmed.
Kanye has been hiding from us all year. We were hoping to actually see his face during this performance. Instead, he performed from the top of a volcano set-up, hidden by shadows as pyrotechnics exploded below him and mountainscapes and weather patterns were displayed on the screen behind him.
Between the distracting theatrics and the censored lyrics, Kanye's come back fell short. Okay, so maybe we didn't approve of him busting Taylor's chops, but we still miss the confident, in-your-face Kanye that thought he was the best rapper in all the land and made sure we knew it.
Tonight, the star of Kanye's performance was the giant chain around his neck. How did he stand up?

Easily one of the best performances in BET history. Kanye has comeback. He brought the feeling of his tour show to the BET awards. His music sounds epic and he gave an epic backdrop for the one of the best songs of 2010 so far.
i mean the censored lyrics aren't his fault, his song has words that aren't allowed to be aired. nothing he can do about that.
but i thought the performance was strong. fit the song quite well, and the background was overpowering and mesmerizing.

I agree. The imagery fits the song. Power and him standing on a mountain top "preaching" to the rest of us. Certainly fits the "Highest" power.
Kanye sucks. He's an arrogant jerk and I hope his single and album bomb HARD. He totally deserves it. Down with Kanye!

everyone hates him, but the song was awesome. No one is really discussing the song. I think people just hate him because he is good and arrogant. If he was white I'm sure there would be no problem at all.

Persoanlly, I think people should drop the whole Taylor Swift thing, grow up and realise **** happens. Kanye's talented to hell, he maybe arrogant, but if he wasn't, he wouldn't be true to himself, and he wouldn't be the superstar he is. A lot of people who are commenting on him, and his personality are more jealous of his artistic talent and flair. His style, persona and general being come natural to him, which is how any musician should be, rather than the dictated to and under the thumb mass produced artists that are all too common.
Kanye's performance at BET was pretty damn decent if I do say so, because it's not the most "summer-pop-hit" song which everyone expects from artists, it's him doing his own style and keeping it original and fresh, which Kanye is all about.
From an artistic point of view the stage pyrotechnics and set ups perfectly compliment the "Power" idea, the use of the powerful figure of mountains, with the smoke and effects create a brilliant atmosphere for the performance.
Well done Kanye, looking forwards to hearing the rest of your album, your views and your messages within them. Don't ever let other people dictate to you how you should be. You're your own person. Good luck Mr West.
