'Golden Girls' theme 'Thank You for Being a Friend's' hidden history

<

The Dish Rag can't count how many times we've listened to "The Golden Girls" theme song, "Thank You for Being a Friend."

But it took the Thursday (June 3) sad death of Rue McClanahan (aka Blanche Devereaux) -- whose voice you hear in beginning of the video above talking about the original script for "Golden Girls"  -- for us to find out that the catchy tune was actually written by Andrew Gold (seen in the video below) for his third album, "All This and Heaven Too."

As a single, the song reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. Who knew? The song was later revived for "Golden Girls" in a version recorded by Cynthia Fee.

"Being a Friend" was also heard in "The Simpsons" episode "Double, Double, Boy in Trouble" at Lenny's dinner party.

Most recently, past and present cast members of Saturday Night Live sang the song during an episode hosted by Betty White on May 8. At the end, Betty slipped on a ski mask and performed a death metal version of the song.

Thanks, but we still prefer the original.

How is this "hidden" history? I hear Andrew Gold's version on Sirius at least once a week. It was quite well-known before "Golden Girls" (although Cynthia Fee's cover for the show is superior, IMO).

SNL did a version of 'Thank You for Being a Friend' earlier than the one with Betty White as the host. I forget the year, but the skit was about high school teenagers who were Golden Girls fanatics -- pretending as if they were Rose, Blanche, Dorothy or Sophia; eating lots of cheesecake. During the skit, the cast members did a chorus version of 'Thank You...' which surprisingly wasn't a spoof of the song and it sounded excellent.

I cried my eyes out. Always prayed one day to meet her. Have collected most of her work and read her book. She toughed it all out - but never lost focus. Heaven is brighter today, the world sadder. What a talent. The lady with the gold heart. Thanks for making up laugh and forgetting just for a while, our heartaches. Thanks for the inspiration. Rest in Peace Rue.
