'American Pie' star Chris Klein arrested on DUI, may face jail [update]

Chris Klein -- best known for starring in "American Pie" and being Katie Holmes' longtime beau before Tom Cruise, and, oh yeah, dating Ginnifer Goodwin  -- was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI.

The clean-cut actor was pulled over on the LA 101 freeway at 3:13AM. Klein, 31, failed a sobriety test. Sources say his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.

The sad news is this is not his first DUI. He was arrested and convicted of DUI in 2004. And California law states that he serve a minimum 4 days in jail if he's convicted of DUI again.

TMZ reports that Klein wasn't alone when he was pulled over.

There was a dog in his car. Thankfully, a friend retrieved his pooch after the cops arrested him.

[Update] But that hasn't stopped one animal rights group from issuing a statement.

"In Defense of Animals" tells TMZ:  "By choosing to drive under the influence with his dog in the car, Chris not only put innocent drivers in danger, but broke a promise to be a protector and guardian to his pet."

Klein has now been released from jail. And his dog has probably already forgiven him for the whole mess. Which is more than we can say for the legal system.
