REPORT: John Edwards wants a plea deal to avoid jail

Disgraced former vice presidential candidate and senator John Edwards reportedly wants to work out a "plea deal" to avoid serving jail time. And that will involve him having to admit his guilt. For the third time.

He denied having an affair with Rielle Hunter, then denied he was the father of her child. He recanted on both of those denials. Is he ready for another one?

Edwards has been investigated for a year by the feds, including the FBI and IRS, for alleged campaign violations related to paying his mistress Rielle Hunter.

According to the National Enquirer, who broke the story, an indictment is coming and John is terrified of going to prison.

"He's been working "around-the-clock behind the scenes with his lawyers to work out a deal with prosecutors," they report. "John does not want to be indicted -- and he certainly doesn't want to go to jail! It appears he's willing to cop to a misdemeanor charge. He's asking to keep his law license."
 
The grand jury investigation began after allegations of "hush money"  paid to Rielle and Andrew Young, a married Edwards' aide, began to surface. Young had claimed he was sexually involved with Rielle -- and had fathered her child --  to protect his boss..

Young has written a book about his role in the cover-up and admitted he lied. He's publicly lambasted John and Elizabeth Edwards in interviews and testified against Edwards before the grand jury.
