Melissa Etheridge's songs 'aren't gay enough' for 'Glee'

melissa-ethridge2.jpgMelissa Etheridge, whose new album "Fearless Love," is coming out soon, was asked by our pals at Popeater about the recent Newsweek gay actors playing straight controversy

To recap: A Newsweek theatre critic wrote that Sean Hayes was too gay to play straight in the Broadway play, 'Promises, Promises.' His costar Kristin Chenoweth wrote a letter to Newsweek scolding them for discrimination, "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy called for a boycott of the mag, and GLAAD asked for an apology.

"Oh, the gays are getting miffed!, replied Etheridge. "Don't tell us we're too gay or not or whatever. Oh lord, what is gay, anyway? Find me the line -- find me the defining line between gay and straight. Find me the defining line between male and female. There is no line... Behind all of it is sexual insecurity. It's sexphobia."

"Oh sure. I've had the gay community say, "Why don't you write a song saying 'her'? Your lyrics are non-gender." They're never happy. And the straight folks, they just assume the lyrics are about a woman, and they assume that if they go to a concert it's going to be all gay people. There are stereotypes we all have. But there's no us and them. Good God, we're all the same."

But she has never been approached to have her songs sung on "Glee," like Madonna and Olivia Newton John.

"No, I don't think [my songs] are gay enough," she replied.

As for if "Miss California" is about her ex-partner Tammy Lynn Michaels: "That's a political song. It's about California passing Proposition 8"

replied Ethridge. "Don't tell us we're too gay or not or whatever. Oh lord, what is gay, anyway? Find me the line -- find me the defining line between gay and straight.

WAIT A MINUTE!

There is no fine line between straight and gay... What kind of moronic statement is that?

Then she goes on to say
"Find me the defining line between male and female."

When you were seven and you looked at the boys peeing on trees while you had to go behind a bush ... THERE IS YOUR INDICATOR!

HA oh my goodness what has this world come to when someone with a radical slant can say such things as there is a fine line between men and women genetically...

That woman is MESSED UP IN THE BRAIN...

nothing wrong with being Gay...

BUT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE

BUY A LIGHT BULB AND STOP DOING IT IN THE DARK! YOU WILL SEE THE DIFFERENCE!

HA oh my goodness.... heh

Lets givem somethin to talk about ..love love loveeeee

actually.... at the time of this article posting... her new album, "fearless love" was already out for purchase.

i think her initial point was to reject the notion of a formula to determine if someone is gay or straight. football playing guy = straight. effeminate man = gay.

i give you the objection to the line about a distinction between male/female.

@ HockeyGuy: A fine line between straight and gay? I've know too many bisexuals to believe that.

I hope that she was kidding (tongue in cheek maybe) when she said her songs weren't gay enough because if she really believes that it negates virtually everything else she said about defining lines in the interview. Can't have it both ways. Personally I simply don't believe her songs are melodic enough to adapt to the "Glee" formula.

Ophu she didnt say there is a fine line between being straight and gay she said "find me the line"

That means she thinks there is no line there is no difference...

Well if you are talking a gay or straight accountant that is performing the job of accounting then sure... but she is talking about love and sexual relationships....

We really don't need to get into the mechanics of differences between straight and gay sex but even the emotional relationships... HUGE DIFFERENCES.

If someone does not see the line (with the exception of bisexuality ophu which she was not talking about) ... then you have a problem.

If you can't value one over the other.. or if you are so confused that you search for love anyplace you can find it with no exception or value in your self ...

You got a big problem..

These are her words... her ideas.

And i tell you it is very similar to what Ellen went through with Anne Heche... was anne looking for love or a scandal/paycheck?

Ellen was looking for love.. and I am happy she found it.

Let's be honest though, can anyone name a Melissa Ethridge song you can put a dance routine too? And furthrmore, never mind Melissa on Glee let's get her ex Tammy Lynn Michaels back on the telly - she did get her start in Ryan Murphy's first show 'Popular' after all.

The child psychologist working with the boy who likes to wear dresses said it best "there is more than one way to be a girl and more than one way to be a boy"

Perhaps that's what ME was referring to... the genderless-ness of it all. We are we are.
