Justin Bieber, Jonas Brothers liven up White House Correspondents Dinner
The White House Correspondents Association dinner, an annual convergence of policymakers, Hollywood A-listers and the journalists who cover them both, was held at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C Saturday (May 1). Nearly 3,000 famous and powerful people ate something called wheatberry terrine and roasted halibut, before being entertained by "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno and President Obama, who is no slouch in the joke department.
Onstage, Obama snapped Leno as "the only person whose ratings fell more than mine," adding that he was glad to talk before Jay: "we've all seen what happens when you take the time slot after Leno."
But the interesting aspect of the event, known on the Web as the ultimate Nerd Prom, is the unlikely couples you see: Star-struck politicians and policymakers mingling with power-blinded entertainers and celebrities.
This year's event drew a cross section of celebs, from The Jonas Brothers (Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato held hands all night, we hear), teen heartthrob Justin Bieber (who was staying up way past his bedtime) mingled with CIA director Leon Panetta before posing with reality TV/sex tape star Kim Kardashian, who also rubbed elbows with TV political host Chris Matthews. Hollywood heavyweights Michel Douglas and Steven Spielberg were seen chatting with White House aide Rahm Emmanuel. What did they talk about? That's what we want to know.Other guests included Ashton Kutcher (remember -- he's one of Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2010 for some inexplicable reason) and his wife Demi Moore, Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn, Betty White, "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin, comedian Chevy Chase, comedian Bill Maher, actress Michelle Pfeiffer, actor Dennis Quaid, "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, "Iron Man 2" action babe Scarlett Johansson, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, GOP Chairman Michael Steele, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and White House senior adviser David Axelrod.
It's true what they say: Politics makes very strange bedfellows. If only for one night a year.
