'Hallelujah': Who sang it best? Leonard Cohen, kd lang, Justin Timberlake, Rufus Wainwright or Lee DeWyze?
.
Lee DeWyze sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" so beautifully on Tuesday's (May 18) "American Idol" that he brought chills to the studio and TV audience as well as all the judges. And we do mean all.
Randy Jackson called it "unbelievable, dude, unbelievable." Ellen DeGeneres added: "stunning...just stunning." Even Kara DioGuardi raved: "You just owned the entire night. Even Simon Legree Cowell said: "With that
performance you proved you are fantastic singer and a great person and
I hope you make it."
How would you rank Lee DeWyze's version next to k.d. lang's breath-taking version sung during the 2010 Winter Olympics?
The below video is not from the Olympics but a previous performance by k.d.as well as versions by the master himself, Leonard Cohen, Justin Timberlake, Rufus Wainwright and yet another "Idol" contestant, Jason Castro.
Who sings it best? Or do you know another artist that tops them all?

Justin Timberlake without a doubt. The simplicity and stripped down approach to it was stunning and so emotionally connected. His voice was angelic yet quietly powerful and will not be done that brilliantly except for perhaps Jeff Buckley's definitive version. Lee's was okay, it wasn't bad but so forced to make an Idol moment by throwing everything but the kitchen sink into it crafted by the Idol producers eager for a water cooler talk.
The always amazing Allison Crowe performs my favorite rendition of Hallelujah.
It's such a beautiful song, starting, of course, with Leonard Cohen. There's a version for everyone to love!
My two favorites: Jason Castro and K.D. Lang.
Where is Jeff Buckley? I have to say his version is without a doubt the best!!
quite simply... kd lang's olympic performace was the best ever. after that, cohen's own versions of his song.
now, i agree with a pregious comment... the covering of this song needs to stop. leonard may have to ask people to stop. he has a tonne of brilliant songs which people could cover if they want to use his genius. go through his catalogue and pick another (advice to future contestants and judges). for that matter, idol and shows like it need to expand the music choice or educate this crowd on the vast history of uncovered great "pop" songs of the last 50+ years.
dear god, people, NO ONE has ever covered this song better than jeff buckley. can we PLEASE move on before the song gets ruined by overexposure?????
it's meaningless comparing AI performances to the others, which must be performed within about 2 minutes.
and "copying" is totally different from "covering". Jason's was just a "copy" of Buckley, however, without doubt amazing.
Lee's was a "cover" (very similar to Burke's).
What about Jeff Buckley???
Bon Jovi has also been doing an amazing version of it at concerts for years.
The incomparable Rufus Wainwright... a sentiment echoed by the writer of the song - Leonard Cohen. But Jeff Buckley should have been shown here as his version makes it an appropriate punch to the gut. This isn't exactly your standard hymn or sweet love song as so many have seemed think. The lyrics are stunning and complicated and few of the people singing this marvel seem to get it. Love K.D. but that version seems over orchestrated and plodding.
Eh, Rufus me'thinks!
