Beau Biden, Joe Biden's son, suffers mild stroke

Beau Biden, 41, has suffered a stroke, the White House announced Tuesday (May 11).

Vice President Joe Biden's eldest son was admitted to Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del., "after having what we believe to be a mild stroke," according to a statement from his doctor, released by the vice president's office.

Beau Biden, who is Delaware's attorney general, is in good spirits and talking with his family at the hospital. He is fully alert, in stable condition and has not lost any motor or speech skills. He is expected to make a complete recovery.

It's a little known fact that many adults under the age of 45 suffer strokes, which are the third leading cause of death in the United States.

Ten to fifteen percent of strokes strike otherwise seemingly healthy individuals under the age of 45, Dr. Aneesh Singhal, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, tells  ABC News.

A recent Wayne State University study showed that young adults who suffer strokes are often misdiagnosed with vertigo, migraine, alcohol intoxication, seizure, and an inner ear disorder.

Risk factors for young adults?  A personal and/or family history of migraines, smoking and, in women, oral contraceptive use.

Biden will be transferred  later today to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia for "further observation and examination," according to the vice president's office.
