Vanessa Hudgens makes 'Rent' with Neil Patrick Harris

Vanessa Hudgens is leaving her "High School Musical" girl next door character behind to play Mimi Marquez in the Neil Patrick Harris-directed "Rent" revival at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles this August.Mimi is a 19-year-old HIV-positive junkie who works as an S&M dancer.Over the course of two acts, she falls in love with former addict Roger, quits using, relapses, leaves rehab early, winds up homeless and nearly dies. It's a far cry from Hudgens' Disney roots.
Hudgens is the first actor cast in the production, which will run for only three days. NPH tells TMZ, "I look forward to audiences seeing a dark, edgy and very different side of Vanessa Hudgens this August." Harris and Hudgens co-star in the upcoming "Beauty and the Beast" update, "Beastly."

Let's hope she leaves the whole teeny-bopper b.s. personality with Disney. Stage theater is a whole different ball game (even if it is only a 3-day-run).
