'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' taps Oscar winner Bill Condon as director

bill-condon-getty-one.jpgIt's official -- the fourth installment in the "Twilight Saga" movies "Breaking Dawn" has announced its director. Bill Condon, most famous for writing and directing "Dreamgirls," "Kinsey" and "Gods and Monsters," has nabbed the job.

Condon won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Gods and Monsters" in 1999 and was nominated for a second Oscar for his screenplay of "Chicago." He most recently directed the pilot for the new Showtime series "The Big C" and he also produced the 81st Academy Awards telecast in 2009.

Erik Feig, President of Production and Acquisitions for Summit Entertainment, says of Condon in a statement, "Bringing Stephenie Meyer's 'Breaking Dawn' to the screen requires a graceful and intelligent hand and we believe Bill Condon is exactly the right steward, having shown equal and abundant talents of immense creativity and subtle sensitivity."

"Twilight" author Meyer adds, "I'm so thrilled that Bill wants to work with us. I think he's going to be a great fit, and I'm excited to see what he does with the material."

"I'm very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life on-screen," says Condon. "As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book - and we're hoping to create an equally unique cinematic experience."

There is no word as whether "Breaking Dawn" will be one movie or two, as has been previously speculated. Directors Gus Van Sant and Sofia Coppola were other names that have been rumored to be in talks for "Breaking Dawn," but Summit has chosen Condon. We can't wait to see what he does with the final book.

The third installment in the series, "Eclipse," hits theaters June 30, 2010.
