GLAAD Awards: Miss. student Constance McMillen to be New York Pride Grand Marshall
Funny gal Wanda Sykes asked Constance McMillen, the young Mississippi high school student who successfully sued her high school for the right to bring her girlfriend to the prom, to present her award at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday (Apr. 17).
On the red carpet last night, Constance -- with NO 8 emblazoned on her cheek -- talked to The Dish Rag about being among so many supportive -- and "famous people!" at the awards.
"It's very nice to get out of all hate," she explained. "All I did was stand up for what i thought was right."
Which was not easy. She admits that "the hatred and the bullying was hard" but says she is so grateful for the good things that have come out of it, including the love and support from the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
Her bravery has made her a pretty big celebrity, even among the GLAAD guests including the cast of "Glee," Adam Lambert and skating champ Johnny Weir. And it's not over yet.
"I think I'm going to LA Pride and I will be the Grand Marshall at the New York Pride, she shared. "I've never been to Pride so I'm very excited about that."
ACLE rep Christine Sun told The Dish Rag that the agency is now filing another lawsuit for compensatory damages from the school. This lawsuit will determine how much the school officials knew about the sparsely attended fake prom that Constance and seven other students attended and the allegedly canceled real prom that was kept secret from Constance.
