'American Idol's' David Archuleta goes to a gay club, takes great pains to explain why

david-archuleta-getty.jpgWe're not so naive to think that when former "American Idol" runner-up David Archuleta was spotted at a gay club over the weekend, it wouldn't make some sort of ripple in the celebri-blog universe.

But had Archie -- he of the wholesome, squeaky-clean image and cross-generational pop audience -- just said "I was there to hear my friend perform" and left it at that, there's a fair chance we wouldn't be writing about it now.

Instead, though, Archuleta took his explanation for why he was at New York's Club 57 on Saturday (April 17) to Seinfeldian, not-that-there's-anything-wrong-with-that heights, then had to clarify via his Twitter feed (as noted by Celebuzz) that no, really, he loves all people regardless of sexual orientation.

The facts are these: Archuleta was at Club 57 to watch his friend, singer Charice Pempengco, perform (her song "Pyramid" is in the top 10 on the dance charts). That's it. For whatever reason, though, Archuleta felt the need to say all this via Twitter:

Tweet 1: "Hey guys just wanted to clear something up real quick lol. Last night in New York I got invited to go and see my friend Charice perform."

Tweet 2: "Mental note to self: always ask where before you go! Wasn't my kind of place lol, and I had no clue! I guess you live and learn. The..."

Tweet 3: "upside was that Charice was awesome, and she has an incredible voice. Hope that clears things up! Been seeing some of the tweets.. sheesh!"

Tweet 4: "Can get crazy quick. NO worries all, I wouldn't get into things like that intentionally haha. Hope you guys have a good Sunday!"

His comments, unsurprisingly, led to a bit of a backlash, which then prompted him to tweet the following response: "I have friends who are gay, and they're great people. Whether they're gay or not doesn't change how I think of them. I have nothing against anyone, I'm sorry if that's how it came across. I'm just not into the partying scene lol."

Then there's Charice, who reiterated via her own tweets that Archuleta was just there to support her: "I am really thankful to have a great friend like David..thank you @DavidArchie for the support," she said first. That was followed by "One more thing, i just got invited there because Pyramid is no.7 on Billboard dance remix and i really had to go there to promote it."

OK then. That's all cleared up. But somehow we wonder if "I was there to see my friend Charice perform. She was awesome, buy her record!" wouldn't have saved us all some time.

Honestly, this article made me go listen to what "Pyramid" was and this Charice chick should be happy the clubs are showing her some love because I've never heard of her ***. That said, the Dave Aude mix of the song kicks ***. Girlfriend shouldn't bite the well manicured hand that feeds her. And Archie should've just taken zap2it's advice.

wow !!!!! give it a break already...you people are idiots...
where were you all 2 weeks ago when he was in Utah with a 'Make A Wish kid' making his dream of seeing the Salt Lake Real Soccer team and singing with David on the field, come true???? where the flip were you all then????? No where to be found...
what straight 19 year kid would feel comfortable in the place he was at??? and more the question, what kind of management books a 16 year old girl to sing in a place like that?????!!!!!
At least David has the guts to face all the stupid questions place to him on his twitter and answer them truthfully himself and not have some manager or publicist answer for him....he's only f'n 19 for crying out loud, but he has more guts, class and sincerity then you all...
he never once bashed on gays...just said he wasn't comfortable in that setting...
and where were you all when he said on American Idol that he loves Ellen??? did you miss that too???? did you miss last year when he was asked point blank about the 'gay rumor'??? and his answer was......'my interest is in girls, but no matter what I say people will believe what they want to believe about me, and that's their problem' did you miss that one too???
and if you knew ANYTHING about him, then you would also know he doesn't even attend many Hollywood parties either... it's NOT HIS thing...
I think you all writing this **** about David need to go back and re read what he wrote...
you have totally taken it and twisted it...
typical media reporting to 'make' a story and bypassing the facts..

VJB that's what the article is saying. Can you read?

What's Archie without a little leather in his mouth?

Davey makes a boo-boo! And it's okay.

Folks may too big a deal over nothing!

David Archuleta is such a little boy...

David Archuleta is awesome! I totally understand his need to clarify what happened, 'cuz I'd do exactly the same. I think it's cute. However, he did stick his foot in his mouth a little bit. But come on. David would never intentionally offend anyone, and ppl need to start understanding that and stop making a mountain out of a molehill. I don't see anything wrong with what he said, and he shouldn't have felt he had to explain himself.

I can't wait until he gets his first drunk tweet on. Should be hilarious.

Oh come on
he's just a little kid
leave him alone

I'm happy with the way David went about this. I don't think he should've just said he was there to see Charice and left it at that. I'm happy he took it head on and cleared up ALL the rumors going around. David wouldn't want poeple to keep wondering things about him, he just wanted to state the facts. And the reason he did in on twitter was so it'd be more public. He contemplated about doing a blog, but then decided to tweet it because only fans read the blogs, and he wanted everyone to know what he had to say. In the end I admire David for the way he handled this and I hope everyone believes him.

I know Charice is "David's" friend. But she and whoever is behind her, should have know better to tell David where they were inviting him to. My guess? They were trying to get free publicity out of Archie! What does a girl have to do in a club where people have their shirts taken off? Gay or straight that's not a place for Charice, and that's certainly not a place to invite a guy friend who is famous.
