The Black Eyed Peas, Shakira and Alicia Keys to sing at World Cup
Here's a little news that might cheer up the David Beckham fans in mourning over his injury: The Black Eyed Peas, Shakira and Alicia Keys will be among stars set to perform at a concert on the eve of the World Cup in South Africa, organizers said Wednesday (March 17).The concert will be held on Thursday, June 10, the day before the start of the month-long World Cup. This marks the first time that Africa will host soccer's (or football's, as it's called most places around world) biggest competition.
Around 30,000 people will be able to watch from the stadium while it's broadcast around the world for millions more to see.
"We are thrilled to have a concert of such magnitude and performing talent raise the curtain on the first FIFA World Cup in Africa. It is testament to the universal and unifying power of football and music, and will start the competition off on the right note -- of celebration," says FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke.
The concert is all for a good cause. Net proceeds will go to 20 Centres for 2010, which is FIFA's official social campaign for the World Cup -- which aims to build 20 centres across Africa offering healthcare services, education and soccer training for disadvantaged communities.
Beckham will most likely be watching from the sidelines. The 34-year-old midfielder underwent emergency surgery on his left Achilles tendon after injuring himself in the AC Milan/Chievo match on Sunday. A six-month recovery is expected.
