Ricky Martin comes out: 'I am a fortunate homosexual man'

Ricky Martin has been hounded by rumors about his sexuality for years, but Monday (March 29) he put the questions to rest. "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am," he wrote in a letter on his official website.
In the letter, which was posted in both Spanish and English, Martin says that his children inspired him to come out.
"These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed."
Martin, who is a single father to two sons born via surrogate, says that he was advised to stay in the closet for the sake of his career. Though "all this advice came from people I love dearly," he made the decision to come out because "allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage."
In response, GLAAD has released the following statement:
"When someone like Ricky Martin comes out, hundreds of millions of people now have a cultural connection with an artist, a celebrity and, perhaps most importantly, a father who happens to be gay," said Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). "His decision to model this kind of openness and honesty can lead to greater acceptance for countless gay people in U.S., in Latin America and worldwide."

By being honest with the public, he serves as a spectacular role model for his children (which is of paramount importance) as well as for the millions of LGBT youth around the world who live in fear of society or religion's wrath. Issues of sexuality have been such a divisive ingredient in the manufacture of hate and violence. Mr. Martin now rises above those who would choose to make him a scapegoat for the advancement of their own flawed ideologies.

There has been a lot of rumors about gay guys in the tv industry. Does this mean that all rumors about those alleged male gay celebrities are true? I think I now believe those gossips. Grow up homosexuals!

Who cares? I don't care who he sleeps with, nor is it any of my business. It is a shame he felt it necessary to hide this facet of his personality for so long, but good for him for his bravery. I'm sure it wasn't easy. If you're sitting around speculating about some celebrities sexual orientation-GET A LIFE!

I wonder if this has anything to do with recent Barbara Walters quotes that she still gets critcized for a 2000 interview -- where she unsuccessfully pressed him to clear up the rumours and say whether he was gay or straight -- that "some say ruined his career."

That's great he is being honest and real. But I believe we weren't created to be homesexuals. I respect you as a person, but I don't approve of your lifestyle. God did not create humans to be male to male or female to female.
