Johnny Weir on the Olympics and the fur threats, 'I like to be friends with the crazy'

johnny-weir-olympics-fur-threats-be-good-johnny-weir-sundance.jpgIn Vancouver, figure skater Johnny Weir competed in his last winter Olympics.

Fans of his reality show on the Sundance Channel, "Be Good Johnny Weir," know that the road to Vancouver was a tough one for the athlete.

Leading up to the Olympics, Weir made headlines after fur activists objected to his use of fur on his skating costume and made threats on the athlete. Even after Weir agreed to remove it, the threats apparently continued and Weir decided to stay within the relative security of the Olympic village.

It was during the Olympics, though, when Weir's scores disappointed fans. To them, it seemed Weir was punished for opting for artistic value over the more obvious displays of athletic prowess shown by his competitors, Evan Lysacek and Evgeni Plushenko. Weir says there's more to the story.

In our interview with the Olympian, he sheds light on the Olympic scores, reveals just how serious the fur activists' threats became and how his fans made a difference.

yesh. i do believe johnny weir deserved a mdeal.

Great interview, I'm so impressed with Johnny! He skated beautifully and deserved at least the Bronze medal.

Yes, he deserved a medal. The judges had already decided on Evan before they even hit the ice. I think it is time to completely revamp the judging system and judges because it is not enjoyable to follow a sport that can't compete on a nuetral level. I was very upset about what happened to Johnny and being new to the sport I spent alot of time researching why. I still think Evan was chosen because he pretends to be straight and plays their game. The judges would like to push JW out for a more masculine appearing sport. Very sad that this young man spent most of his life training for this event, he delivered and this happen to him.

Yes, he deserved the bronze.

Johnny - reconsider on the fur, beautiful animals deserve to live their lives don't cut lives short. Let them be free, like you are. Live, and let live.

I hope you skate for a different show - you obviously are an incredible artist and athlete.

I also believe he was underscored.

He absoulutely deserved a bronze. I was so disappointed as he was harshly judged, can't believe the judging system. Johnny was very artistic and his jumps were great at Vancouver. He was amazingly incredible, his presence, his musicality, his authenticity on the ice greatly felt by the audience especially of course by his fans (I am a great fan of JW). I hope he will do a talk show and that the show will be very very successful b/c he deserves to be recognized globally for his talent and authenticity. He is real. He is not hiding in the closet unlike other skaters, it is very obvious some of them are just pretending to be straight, but w/ Johnny..... what you see is what you get. He has class. More power to you Johnny!!! I hope you will not stop doing your reality show Be Good Johnny Weir on Sundance Channell.

Johnny was COMPLETELY underscored. He deserved GOLD! He skated clean and BEAUTIFULLY! Sure Lysacek was also great, but beauty is JUST as (if not more) important than just jumps. Johnny Weir skated with many strong jumps, but he was also beautiful and graceful and fluent, and his performance never got boring, for both the Long and the Short Program. I can't say the same for either Lysacek or Plushenko.
