Health care bill passed in House; GOP member reportedly yells 'baby killer' at Bart Stupak

health-care-reform-vote.jpgThe U.S. House of Representatives passed the Senate health care bill Sunday, March 21 by a vote of 219 to 212. All 178 Republicans opposed the bill, along with 34 Democrats. The entire debate has been heated and the vote Sunday, March 21 was no exception.

According to CNN, an unidentified GOP member yelled out "baby killer" at Senator Stupak from Michigan, as he changed his vote from no to yes on the bill following assurances from President Obama that there will be stringent restrictions on federal funding for abortion.

The entire text of the bill can be seen here, but the immediate gist is that health care companies cannot place a lifetime or annual cap on how much care your insurance will cover, $5 billion will be set aside for uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions, insurers must provide coverage for non-dependent children up to age 26 and there will be $250 for seniors who fall in the Medicare "doughnut hole," a coverage gap that makes prescriptions too expensive for those seniors that fall within the gap.

The Democrats in Congress think this sweeping health care reform will fix a broken system in the United States, while the Republicans think this overhaul will bankrupt the country.

Following the initial vote on the health care bill, the Republicans tried a motion to recommit but the motion failed. There was also an unknown congressman from the Republican side who yelled "baby killer" at Bart Stupak during his floor speech when he opposed the motion to recommit. Stupak is an anti-abortion Democrat from Michigan who changed his vote on the bill at the 11th hour.

Following the failed motion to recommit, the last vote of the night was a reconciliation bill on the changes made to the bill from when the Senate wrote it. That vote passed and ended the House of Representatives voting for Sunday, March 21.

The next step is the Senate voting on the changes made to the bill. If the Senate passes the reconciliation bill without any changes, President Obama will then sign the bill into law. If the Senate were to make changes in the bill, it would then go back to the House of Representatives. The Senate only needs a simple majority to pass the reconciliation bill, however, which the Senate Democrats currently have.

What do you think? Are we on the right track or going off in the wrong direction with this health care reform?

Unconstitutional intrusion on State's rights and personal liberties. I can't wait for the next election!

i agree. i can't wait for the next election. this healthcare bill is similar to communism. what happened tot he red scare? i think we may need that back so we dont truly become a communist "democratic" nation. this is all bs.

You communist screaming idiots are all the same. You live in a selective world where Glenn Beck has more wisdom than the Bible. I feel bad for you.

It is beyond me how the criers of 'unconstitutional' and 'communism' can't see that our current health care system isn't working. I make roughly $30,000 per year and cannot afford to insure my family through my employer. I don't know ANYONE who can afford to pay out $350 PER PAYCHECK under bi-weekly pay to insure themselves + dependants...CAN YOU? perhaps the nay-sayers work for companies with some elusive health care benefits that the rest of us arn't privy to???
Tell me how anyone can justify poverty ridden countries having better health care than the U.S....maybe they don't live high on the hog but they can certainly go to the damn doctor without having to mortgage down to the limbs.
Why can't the rest of the country be insured under Tri-Care? Military insurance is some of the best in the world and their co-pays are amazing and prescripts are $10.
Let's all go take a tour of Britains health care system.
It is available to all regardless of race, creed, age, gender. for most it is FREE to go see a doc or dentist AND for prescriptions. There is a cost for some but is low @ 7.20 pounds. It is amazing to me that you are willing to let our government tell us how to drive, where to pee, that we have to be clothed, but you can't get with the idea that they can regulate and help stabilize a universal health care system. Yeah, it'll probably be a mess for a couple years...wanna know why? Because all of the less fortunate people who cant AFFORD to insure themselves & their children will finally be able to rush off to the doc.

Lets quit with the ignorance and look around @ the rest of the world and the other countries that HAVE implemented universal and made this happen.

there is no such thing as free health care. the government doesn't have any money to spend. all it has is our money, and in this case our kids and grandkids money. If this bill is still toting a trillion dollar price tag over ten years to insure 15 million uninsured that math works out to over $2000 per month per person insured. Even if the government provided service would resemble what 2 grand a month could buy in the open market I still wouldn't have uncle sam hold someone else up at gun point to take money and buy me something i can't afford. the ends don't justify the means. and by the way i make less than 30 grand a year.

"Lets quit with the ignorance and look around @ the rest of the world and the other countries that HAVE implemented universal and made this happen."

Amen.

Americans should be taking care of each other. Those who have should be helping those who have not. I have no problem paying higher taxes to insure that all families can access decent medical care without foreclosing on their homes.

This country is in a ridiculous amount of debt as it is, and at least now we'll be in it for a damn good reason. How anyone would want to deny affordable health coverage to the American people is beyond me.

All I know is that my son who was born with a disability and kicked off my insurance because he is 22 years old, can get back on until he's 26 years old and gives my family time to prepare him for some decent quality of life.

I pity all those that listen to ignorant sound bites and talking points over the REAL suffering of people who through - no fault of their own - were born the way they were.

Born the way they were, huh? Well, at least they were given that opportunity.

Thanks to Stupak, more won't be, and those of us who find the practice even more reprehensible than we find Stupak, will get to pay for the honor.

If only more Democrats practiced what they preach....
