Drew Barrymore, Wanda Sykes to be honored at 21st annual GLAAD Media Awards
Two of The Dish Rag's favorite ladies, Drew Barrymore and Wanda Sykes will be honored at the 21st annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards (GLAAD) is Los Angeles on April 17.
Barrymore will receive the Vanguard Award, given to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.
Barrymore recently played the lesbian daughter of a widower (Robert De Niro) in "Everybody's Fine," which is also nominated for a GLAAD Media award, and in 1995 she starred in "Boys on the Side" which won the Outstanding Film award at the 7th Annual GLAAD awards. Did we mention Barrymore's amazing performance in HBO's "Grey Gardens," which was not a gay role, but it was magnificent so we just thought we'd throw that in there.
Past recipients of The Vanguard Award include Charlize Theron, Antonio Banderas, Sharon Stone, Eric McCormack, Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Kathy Griffin and Whoopi Goldberg.
Wanda Sykes will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, awarded to an openly LGBT media professional who has promoted equal rights. In November 2008, Sykes came out at a Stand Out for Equality rally of over 1,000 people in Las Vegas and announced that she had legally married her wife in California.
Since then, she has appeared in PSAs, performed at fundraisers and been a board member for the Equality California Institute. The Emmy Award-winner also became the first openly gay African American woman to entertain at the 2009 annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
Previous recipients include Rufus Wainwright, Melissa Etheridge, Bill Condon, Alan Ball, Ellen DeGeneres and Sir Ian McKellen.
Not shabby company to keep.
"I am truly honored to receive the Stephen F. Kolzak award," says Sykes. "I greatly appreciate the work that GLAAD continues to do, promoting equality, fair representation and tolerance for our LGBT community. I just pray that I don't ruin what GLAAD has achieved with all of my shenanigans."
No way, Wanda. You're a national treasure.
