'Deadliest Catch' Captain Phil Harris dies
Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Maria and star of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," has died. He had recently suffered a stroke.Harris' two sons Josh and Jake Harris, who also worked on the Cornelia Marie, said in a statement, "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad -- Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers."
Discovery Channel also released the following statement Tuesday night (Feb. 9):
"Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart.
"We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew."
Harris, a crab fisherman, had suffered a stroke while off-loading the Cornelia Marie in late January. He underwent surgery and was showing signs of his usual acerbic character before he passed.
RIP Captain Phil.

about her. Why are you snubbing certain celebs who pass away? Your focus is more on reality stars that pass away rather than the passing of ledgendary icons.
I'm SO SO very sorry to hear this. He was my favorite on deadliest catch. My most heartfelt condolences to his family - a truly monumental loss.

A great man & fantastic captian of the Cornelia Marie. Always at the top in the stats for most crab caught. I will truly miss him. My sincere condolences to the family especially Josh & Jake. Your dad was a great man.

What always seems to happen before life fades, You always begin to show signs of improvement, and then it's over. My sympathy goes out to the entire family and Discovery crew. I can believe that Phil is dropping a cage and having a full hold on the calm seas of heaven! God Speed Cap'n!
