'Days of Our Lives' actress Frances Reid dies

frances-reid-getty.jpgFrances Reid, the "Days of Our Lives" matriarch who starred on the show for more than 40 years, has died.

Reid died Wednesday (Feb. 3) in Los Angeles, according to several reports. She was 95.

Her career in television spanned most of the history of the medium, stretching back to roles in iconic 1950s shows like "The Philco Television Playhouse" and "Studio One." She also appeared in the CBS soaps "As the World Turns" and "The Edge of Night" in the early '60s.

She's best known, though, for her role as Alice Horton on "Days of Our Lives." Reid was a member of the show's original cast and remained a fixture for more than 40 years; her last appearance on the show was in December 2007. She won three Soap Opera Digest Awards for the role and was twice nominated for a Daytime Emmy; she also was given a lifetime achievement award at the Daytime Emmys in 2004.

News of Reid's death brought fond remembrances from several of her co-stars. "['Days' executive] Greg Meng called me this morning to tell me of the loss of our darling Frances Reid," Deidre Hall tweeted. "She was loved, revered, and will be remembered."

"She was a great lady whom I feel honored to have known ... the heart and soul of 'Days of our Lives,'" Nadia Bjorlin wrote. Shawn Christian added, "Your stories and your spirit live in the hearts of those you have touched."

Rest in peace.

RIP Gran

Frances Reid's death is truely sad, but she will be fondly remembered. It just wasn't Christmas unless we saw all the Horton's hanging ornaments on the tree at Alice's. Loved the flash backs with Tom and Alice.

WOW!!!!!!! What a loss--I have been watching DOOL since I was 8yrs old. Not seeing Alice making donuts and giving such good advise will be different. She reminded me of my own gran and I will miss her. My thoughts and prayers go to the crew and to her family...

I agree "Gran" will be missed. The last 2 Christmas holidays were not the same. The past one was horrible. I remember watching with my mom as early as 6 years old. I have a great memory of her from the 80's wearing black leather and riding on the back of Bo's motorcycle. Today is a very sad day.

Frances Reid is an icon and will be forever missed. The show has not been the same without her and her donuts. We have our memories of her that we will hold onto. May she rest in peace.
