Brittany Murphy's death caused by pneumonia, drugs

Brittany Murphy's death was the result of pneumonia exacerbated by drug intoxication, the Los Angeles County coroner says.

The coroner's office released its report on the "Clueless" star's Dec. 21 death on Thursday (Feb. 4), and it lists the primary cause as community acquired pneumonia. The report also notes, however, that "multiple drug intoxication" was what caused the "injury" leading to her accidental death -- i.e., the drugs in her system made things worse.

Murphy was also suffering from anemia and an iron deficiency at the time of her death.

A source at the coroner's office tells TMZ that the drugs in Murphy's body at her death were a mix of prescription and over-the-counter medications. The source also says the coroner believes her pneumonia would have been treatable had she gone to a hospital.

Murphy's husband, Simon Monjack, and mother Sharon have said they didn't believe drugs caused Murphy's death. A full autopsry report on the actress will be released in the next couple of weeks.
