2010 Winter Olympics: Apolo Ohno disqualified in 500-meter race
Apolo Anton Ohno was disqualified Friday (Feb. 26) night in short-track speedskating's 500-meter race after bumping Canada's Francois-Louis Tremblay in the final turn of the race.Of course, being Apolo, he had to cast blame elsewhere claiming that what actually happened out on the ice was "nothing like" what the judges saw. He also implied that the Canadian judge gave a preferential ruling in favor of Charles Hamelin (also Canadian), who ended up winning gold in the race.
Apolo's 2010 Winter Games didn't end on a sour note note though. He went on to win bronze in the 5,000-meter relay race, bringing him to three medals for the Vancouver games, and eight Olympic medals for his overall career.
Eight happens to be his lucky number, so maybe he should quit while he's ahead.

This was BS. It looked like the first skater to fall was holding onto Apolo for balance, as soon as he let go of Apolo's shin, he fell. It also looked like the Canadian skater pushed the Korean skater.
Is the person who wrote this story Canadian? I agree that the judge gave preferential ruling. He only watched the replay for protocol reason. Apolo, keep kicking a** and keep making the people like this jealous that they don't have the same talent. Sorry Canada I think your judge was wrong!!
Apolo we still LOVE you!!! Great on ice and dancing with the stars!!! I've seen you skate for years and you have made us all proud!!!
If you watch the slow mo replay footage-you can see that Apolo's hand was skimming Tremblay's hip to brace himself, but there was no force put into it to "shove". The Korean was already shaky, but Hamelin seemed to follow through with his wrist to tip the Korean off balance.
NBC had better camera angles and footage INSIDE the ring to actually see what happened than the officials.
I did not agree with the judge's call to DQ the Korean woman skater either in favor of China. Not to mention you're not supposed to advance to the next heat if you're not in a qualifying position, which is what happened in one of the men's heats where a Korean was in 4th place.
Inconsistent judging. NBC should officiate if that's all the better Olympics can do.
I agree 100% that was PURE BS plain and simple. He didn't PUSH anybody he just leaned to hold up his balance and removed his hand BEFORE the guy actually went down. He didn't go down WHILE Apolo was removing his hand so as pipedelic and I said PURE BS
Hamelin should have been disqualified for knocking down the South Korean.
Tremblay flopped.
And like much of Canada's effort at putting on an Olympics, the whole shebang stunk on ice.
'Derek'....exactly how have canada failed in putting on the olympics? im pretty sure you are american, ie, bitter! When will you retards realise that the world does not revolve around your backward country? Seriously...grow up.
It was clear that Apollo did what every short track skater does, hand out to guard their space. There was no push that I could see and he withdraws his hand before the Canadian fell.
Having been passed by Apollo, who put himself in position to threaten the Canadian leader, the fall is suspect at best.
Every skater knows a fall would be subject to review and possible disqualification.
Having already lost his medal chances, I cannot help but wonder if the fall was orchestrated in an attempt to ensure a Canadian Medal.
I think further review is needed to determine if what transpired was indeed teamwork , which is strictly against Short Track rules.
Not comfortable with the decision.
Whah!
Apolo is such a whiny baby! Take it like a man for once. I have seen many of Apolo's races and he has won a lot of races when other racers have been disqualified too. Even Bob Costas said that sometimes you benefit from a DQ and sometimes a DQ hurts you. It is the nature of the sport! The NBC play by play called a possible DQ as soon as it happened too. Poor losers, and I am an Apolo fan and an American. I also feel that Canada has done a great job withthe Olympics.
