'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart poised to be Miss Sundance 2010
There are some very hot stars heading for the Sundance Film Festival, held in snowy Park City, Utah, which runs from Thursday, Jan. 21 through the end of the month.
"Gossip Girl" hunk Chace Crawford, Katie Holmes, Dakota Fanning, "Mad Men" star John Hamm, Kate Mara, Malin Akerman, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba and Julia Robert's niece, Emma Roberts will be making the trek up the slopes to support their indie films
But "Twilight Saga" star Kristen Stewart has two films at the festival -- she plays 80's rocker Joan Jett in "The Runaways" and a troubled stripper in "Welcome to the Riley's" -- which puts her in the running to be Miss Sundance 2010, according to our cinema scooper Greg Ellwood over at HitFix.com, who also has a great gallery of some of the most hotly anticipated Sundance films.
Past Indie Queens include Maggie Gyllenhaal, Catherine Keener and Parker Posey, who became mainstream movie stars after doing critically hailed indies.
But in Kristen's case, she's doing it backwards. She's already a big box office star and a major international celebrity, thanks to her "Twilight" role
So the Indie Queen title is just, well, icing on the cake. Or a fresh layer of snow on the slopes.
Not terribly surprising are the negative shudders from some snooty Sundance regulars to international celebrity Stewart's inclusion in the fest. Guess they didn't hear about her BAFTA Rising Star nomination.
But Sundance director John Cooper defends his choice to put two of her films in the festival. "She's putting her money where her mouth is ... I think it's great. These are tough parts."
One thing we're sure of -- and you can put money on this -- you may see Kristen on the slopes during the festival. But you will definitely NOT see her in the celebrity gifting and swag suites lining Main Street in Park City.
So not Kristen, right?

Finally, someone that understands Kristen Stewart. Thank you for giving her credit and pointing out to those snobby film indies that her films truly deserves to be at Sundance. She's been there 3 years in a row and I truly believed she's going to surprise a lot of people with her performance in her movies.
Nay Sayers are being short sighted Kristen has always been an indie actress with only the twilight franchise as her big recent studio releases. She's been at sundance repedatedlt and with excellant movies in the past---into the wild,the fake eaters, the yellow handkerchief and her first visit way back when with Speak.
Why is no1 questioning the inclusion of James Franco films? He like Kristen mixes mainstream and indie movies has done more big budget movies(spider man 1,2 and3), pineapple express. It's a double standard that's wrong. And Kate husdon her recent movies like bride wars and any collaboration with Matthew macaughney should = automatic exclusion from the festival.

Agree with tai. I'd rather die then play in Wedding crushers and other BS.Anybody that plays in valentine's Day movie should be banned even from putting his foot at the fastival.
Kristen Stewart is a true actress, an artist off and on the screen. I have been observing the artistic moves of this young lady.She does not depend on the admiration or applause of others. Meagan---Re-Read my post I said that she had been to sundance with excellant films in the past, never did I say she was the star of each film or that they were Kristen Stewart vehicles. she's also not the star/lead of "the yellow handkercheif" or "what just happened" or "Adventureland" they are ensemble pieces that she was in and that she performed well in and promoted at Sundance. Great movies with great scripts and she Contributed to the quality of the films she's not the teen movie girl suddenly deciding to dip her toes in indie flicks , she's always been an indie actress and has largely selected ensemble pieces in the past.
Got to love the delusional Kristen Stewart fans. Critics who don't like her acting don't matter or are dense. Critics who nominated her for a BAFTA are great. Hypocritical much?
To Laura: critic who nominated Kristen for Bafta are experts in their domein. Read their profiles. It it a team, not an individual.

BAFTA award in which the public (read: Twi-hards) votes for the winner. Gee, I wonder who that is going to be?
She won't win the BAFTA, only UK citizens can vote and Twilight isn't that huge over there. But being notminated was the nice part at all. It should have been for Adventureland though, where she was critically kudo'ed.
Kristen's been a staple at Sundance for years, since she was 14 for criminy's sake. Why would anyone object to her having two instead of one this year? Just because she heads a franchise now? Dumb logic - it's not her fault she's making money while making everyone else look like slackers since she has two entries instead of one. She's worked hard for it.
