St. John's doesn't want a 'blonde.' Like daughter Kelly Gray?
So, clothing line St. John decided to replace their spokesmodel for the past three years, Angelina Jolie, with model/rock star wife Karen Elson because Angie's fame "overshadowed the brand."OK. Fine. It's their money, they should hire who they want with it.
But St. John CEO Glenn McMahon also told Women's Wear Daily that they wanted to "steer away from blondes."
Huh? Who are they talking about here? Before Angelina, Gisele Bundchen was St. John's spokesmodel, but the original face of St. John was the extremely blonde model Kelly Gray.
Who is Kelly Gray? She just happens to be the daughter of Robert and Marie Gray who founded the St. John line back in 1962.
Not only did Kelly model for St. John she worked her way up at the company, from reception to shipping and accounting until she ultimately became the CEO and creative director.
Kelly left St. John in 2005 and in 2006 started the men's line Royal Underground with Motley Crue's bassist Nikki Sixx.
What's up with her replacement wanting to "steer away from blondes" then? Is it an homage that Kelly Gray will always be the one true St. John blonde, or something more catty?
When it comes to fashion, the claws are always out.

Jolie departed St John for 2 years. I recalled reading a really nice press release from their then CEO when she departed or contract ended. There are links to this all over the web. So why's this new joker trying to make it sound recent, when describing their new direction? Is he saying they haven't had any ads for the last two years? Just another person trying to make bank and get attention using Jolie's name to make bank. Very VERY tacky. At best he sounds stupid not knowing his own company already very tactfully parted ways with Jolie (without trying to claim it was THEIR decision, because you know it wasn't - LOL), at worst he sounds deceptive, trying to cover up what anyone can Google inside of two seconds. St Johns should issue a retraction or apology. I bought my first St John piece when I was 22, and that was ONLY because I saw Jolie in something I really loved.
