Tiger Woods: Case closed ... at least according to cops

As far as the state of Florida is concerned, Tiger Woods' SUV smash-up is worth all of $164.

That may end up being the least of Tiger's headaches as the result of the crash and the hoopla that's surrounded it, but at least the world's No. 1 golfer knows that he won't be facing criminal charges.

The Florida Highway Patrol -- in a very no-nonsense press conference that lasted all of a couple of minutes -- announced that Woods was cited for careless driving for backing his Escalade into a fire hydrant and a neighbor's tree early Friday morning. He's already paid the $164 ticket, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Of course, we still don't know exactly why Tiger was driving away from his house at 2:20 a.m. Or how his face got scratched up. Or which of the women who have come forward to either claim or deny they've had affairs with him are telling the truth. Or what his wife, Elin, thinks of all of this.

But that's not the FHP's job.

Celebrities owe their fans only a good performance whether on screen, on the field, on the course or whatever the appropriate venue is. Mr. Woods is known as an exceedingly private person. Media demanding an explanation (yes, I too am curious) and then excoriating him because he chooses not to provide one is, at the very least, totally disrespectful. We have become a society that feels we are owed an explanation for every action and reaction by any person of note. I would dearly love to see how anyone not in the spotlight would react to someone following them 24/7 just to catch them in some sort of compromising position. Give the man his privacy. It truly is none of our business. As an audience we should be concerned with the quality of the performance and, perchance, significant events in their lives. But what they choose to share with us should be up to them.

So did Tiger ever talk to the police? I never heard anything to indicate that he did. It sounds like the cops just gave up. There isn't a non-celeb out there who could get away with blowing off the cops three times.
