Madonna tells Rolling Stone Lady Gaga reminds her of herself. Is that a compliment?

Madonna tells Rolling Stone that she can relate to Lady Gaga.

She actually sees a lot of her early self in Gaga. She -- like the "Poker Face" singer -- also had no money at the start of her singing career.

"I see myself in Lady Gaga," Madge tells RS. "When I saw her, she didn't have a lot of money for her production. She's got holes in her fishnets, and there's mistakes everywhere.

"It was kind of a mess, but I can see that she has that IT Factor. It's nice to see that at a raw stage."

No wonder she agreed to appear with Lady Gaga on "Saturday Night Live" recently. In fact, we had trouble telling these two apart. Did you?

Lady Gaga is broken-hearted over Speedy?

Lady Gaga is totally gay, Kanye. Not gay fish. G-A-Y.

Madonna comparing anyone to herself is a compliment. Lady GaGa is a good artist and has a lot of potential but Madonna is the QUEEN.

of course she sees herself in lady gaga...a narcissist sees himself in everybody...but see how slyly she puts lady gaga down as she compliments her, true narcissistic style, has to bring others down in order to prop herself up, by saying that her concert was a mess...the only thing that's a mess is madonna's shriveled soul.

Thanks, Christian Siriano, for giving us a phrase appropos of this awful, awful skit. It's the definition of Hot Mess.

Madonna is clinging into Lady Gaga because she's the hot stuff right now. Hmmm.. Didn't she say that she also saw herself in Britney before? Anyway, Ms. Spears is definitely back. It's just a matter of time that Lady Who and Ma "duh" na will be gone. I like Lady Gaga, but you can only take so much of her. With her craziness right now, where else is she going?

Madonna singularly OWNS all these female pop stars - and she knows it. She doesn't even have to try; paying Gaga a compliment like this is just a way of patronising her for her lack of the total package, just as she did with Britney and Christina. Don't you see it?

Gaga will NEVER EVER be Madonna or achieve what Madonna has done throughout her career - why? Because the Queen of Pop has already spoken and said whatever needed to be said in the same campy pop pastiche Gaga is trying desperately to (shudder) 'redefine'.

Whenever I look at Gaga I just think... been there, done that - and not just by Madonna. Think Kylie, Britney, Xtina and the slew of other female pop femme fetales who depend on dominatrix gear to try & grab attention to their act, no matter how well conceptualized or not it may be.

I just think Gaga is firing in the wrong direction artistically, when she could be so much more. Really - what she needs is a subtext that works and is relevant; at least Madonna had that when she was her age, or even younger. Gaga needs to START MAKING SENSE to people, out of all the nonsense she throws at us.. and quit pretending it's some sort of relevant art. If what she does really matters, the 'art' ought to be speaking volumes for itself. But sadly, it misfires at this early stage in her career.

She may demonstrate some degree of technical prowess at singing, the piano and in the pure theatrical aspect of her performances, all edgy and provocative for the sake of being provocative (with nothing 'really' significant or meaningful to provoke mind you)... but if you were to strip away all the layers, the aesthetic value really amounts to nought. You don't walk away from a performance of hers feeling genuinely touched, in spite of all the extravagance and drama. When compared to Madonna in her upcoming years, you realise there's actually precious little in Gaga's performances - whereas Madonna made an impact and delivered messages that made you think, beneath all the elaborate costumery and stage effects. Gaga's messages though, cannot be generalised to a very wide population, e.g. does she model herself as a gay activist, a made-for-theatre type who happened to get lucky, or is she just another young woman who wants a piece of the fame pie and the chance to bask in a spotlight as self-crowned princess for a while? Any way you look at it, Lady Gaga's product - in the words of Lady Madonna herself - is one that requires a process of refinement, filtering maybe. Please don't give us art for art's sake, but instead art that is personally meaningful to us each.

love madonna but shes old and cant do it like gaga anymore

I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga's but I really think that in order to be able to be opinionated about any topic, one should possess at least a bit of knowledge on the subject. She's displying an array of post-modernist art, Does anyone know what that means? Inform yourselves before passing juggement.

post-modernist trash art perhaps or up your own arse art.I'm really a bit worried about Lady Gaga I think she shows symptoms of narcissitic madness. All these costumes, kooky persona are all attention grabbing stunts to be the cenre of attention. Her stand-offish behaviour / non-identification with other celebrities is very (fanatical) narcissitic behaviour
