EXCLUSIVE: Kim Raver goes to the dark side for 'Grey's Anatomy' role

The Dish Rag has the scoop that "24" hero Jack Bauer's ex -- Kim Raver -- had to darken her highlighted hair for her new "Grey's Anatomy" role.

Seems the producers want her character -- a new surgeon and a possible love interest for Kevin McKidd's Owen -- to have darker hair.

So she had her highlights toned down this week by colorist-to-the-stars Negin Zand at Sally Hershberger's salon on La Cienega.

We love Kim's highlighted hair because it looks sun-kissed, natural and healthy. 

But the brainy beauty will probably look gorgeous with brown hair too.

This not the first actress who has relied on Zand's ability to lighten up and then take it back down a notch for a role. Read more here.

Raver's role is reportedly a recurring one. She  -- and her darker hair -- will debut in this season's ninth episode, airing Nov. 12.
