Christian Bale based his 'American Psycho' character on Tom Cruise? Run, Katie, run!
"American Psycho" director Mary Harron reveals that Christian Bale based his murderous character Patrick Bateman on Tom Cruise.
"One day he (Bale) called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy."
Gosh, that's what Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman have probably said!
Do you see that in Tom's eyes too?
Or do you think he's got warm and friendly and sincere energy?

Curiously, both Cruise and Amer Psycho author Bret Ellis Eason (hope I got that right) own condos in the same E.13th Manhattan building, so maybe the character originally was based on Cruise.
Um, how can this post be right?
FACT 1) American Psycho came out in theaters on April 14th 2000
But according to my Google research Tom Cruise first appearance on David Letterman was back in 2006 during his MI3 release.
The dates do not add up.....

Allison, does it make sense that Letterman and Cruise have been around for over 25 years and 2006 is the first time Tom appeared on Dave's show to pimp a film? You obviously don't know how the business works. Your "Google Research" is flawed. Try another source.
Of course she's not making it up. The quote has been covered by almost every news outlet in the world. Any indiscrepancies with dates can be attributed to the fact that Marry Harron referred to the wrong chat show host. They're all identikits anyway.
Irrespective of Harron's inaccurate memory about the particular chat show Cruise was on, Bale's observation about Cruise is startlingly good. He really does exude an incredibly false friendliness - and there really is nothing at all behind those eyes. He's a frightening man.
Tom Cruise's first appearance on Letterman was Aug. 10, 1988, on Late Night With David Letterman. Since most people would know that Letterman worked for NBC before CBS, and when he left, he had to change the name of his show to The Late Show With David Letterman. imdb.com is a great resource site.
Funny. Isn't Christian Bale the one who went psycho on people? There are some who will say anything to get attention. S.
In the book, Patrick Batemans favorite show was Late Night with David Letterman and his neighbor was Tom Cruise.
