David Letterman (sorta) defends tasteless jokes about Sarah Palin's daughter

Sarah Palin and Todd Palin are simply nail-spitting mad at David Letterman for jokes he made about their 18-year-old daughter Bristol Palin in a show aired earlier this week. Gov. Palin had been in New York with 14-year-old daughter Willow so it was a Letterman free-for-all about her trip.

On his show last night, Letterman read snippets from statements by the Alaska governor and her husband that were released Wednesday and posted on Facebook. In response to their harsh criticism, he defended his 'cheap jokes.'

Well, he tried. But even he admitted, "I can't really defend these jokes," adding, "They were jokes. Some are fine, some are not fine. ... We make mistakes left and right."

At Sarah's statement that these remarks were "sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity," Letterman bristled. "I am a hardly a celebrity," he huffed. "I am 62, yes."

What do you think? Watch the video in which he recaps all the jokes, in case you missed them the first time.

Did Letterman go too far? Or were they only cheap jokes, people?

Was this an appology? Hardly. Only the 14 year old was on this trip - so there would be no way that she should be mistaken for her sister. Dave, be a man - own-up to the fact that 14-year olds are out of bounds. You have had problems with stalkers in the past, you know what it's like to try and keep your home life private. Why do you continue to bash this family - You won the election. Sounds like a poor winner when you do this kind of crap. First, Stern slams Leno now this - why all the hate? I thought you were a comic?

How can you claim in your article that he defended his jokes? The first words you quote from him are "I can't really defend these jokes."

Letterman's writers have reached the bottom of the barrel. Ask Letterman how he would feel if someone (on national television) made the same comment about his mother and Alex Rodrigez (it hurts when it's

directed at someone you love).

Didn't you kind of leave out that the comment was directed towards Sarah Palin's 14 year old daughter? Sarah was in NY with her 14 year old child, and Letterman made a joke about Arod getting her pregnant at the NY Yanks game. That might effect how people look at the issue a little bit, don't you think?

Horribly inappropriate. Tasteless and very "un-Letterman" in my opinion.

I have overlooked Dave's left-lean for years, because I really like the guy. But this is too much. How will Dave feel when people start making comments about his son Harry- perhaps calling him a bastard?

Not a good look Dave. You need a change.

Letterman is no longer funny. Make sarcastic and lude comments, such as calling my wife a slut or my daughter a *****, to my face, and you won't have to worry about having a gap between your two front teeth. First come up to Alaska, Dave, and go hunting with us. Then have Palin on your show.

Wow, after reading the explanation and defense of Letterman, I realize I never really got a different joke.

Two guys walk into a bar; the third guy ducks.

I thought the joke was the juxtaposition between the meaning of bar as tavern; and the meaning of bar as a wood or metal object.

But I completely missed the implied humor that the second guy wasn't really present at all to walk into the bar, he was mistaken for someone who was there, and instead the second guy was at home hundreds of miles away and was not even present for the incident. hehee hahaha WAHAHAHAHA, man that is much funnier now that I understand the implied but otherwise non-existent and missing construct in the narrative joke.

Much like Letterman's reference to Palin's daughter at the ballgame didn't refer to Palin's daughter who was at the ballgame, but a different daughter who wasn't present, and was never part of the joke or setup....

It's like a whole new world of humor has opened up to me.

Mr. Letterman seems gung ho on attacking Sarah Palin's family because her daughter had a child and she is not married, and that gives him amunition. Maybe somebody should point out to Mr. Letterman that he is not married to his son's mother so what makes him any different? Double standard?

The man is a real jerk - never watching him again. I assume he likes to slam Sarah Palin because she is an attractive women and his wife looks like AFTER BIRTH. Agree with above poster - maybe there should be some jokes about his son being a bastard - wonder if he would think that was funny....

Once again, the self-righteous, hypocritical, Republicans and religious right-wing nuts can't take a simple JOKE. Gee, how original. When will they finally evolve?
