Do German polar bears need protection from obsessed fans?
The fact that a woman climbed down into a polar bear cage and got bitten will not cause any new security measures at the Berlin zoo, according to Associated Press
"The woman has proved herself to be careless by jumping into the
enclosure," a police spokesperson told the Associated Press. "Logic
tells us that polar bears will do this type of thing in this situation."
The unidentified young woman climbed down a fence, over a thorny hedge and a concrete wall before doing a swan dive into the bears private pool. Careless? She sounds more like determined.
The Berlin zoo doesn't plan to change security even after a polar bear attacked a woman who jumped into the bears' enclosure last week.
"It is already safe," zoo spokesman Heiner Kloes told AP about the zoo's safety precautions..
Safe for who?
But we think the zoo is wrong not to enforce stricter safety measures. For the bears.
German celebrity bear Knut was not involved in this incident. But what about next time?
Isn't it bad enough that these poor bears have to be stared at, photographed and videotaped at all day long and have no privacy at all? Even during their embarrassing bathroom moments?
We say these bears need protection from paparazzi and crazy groupies. If one of these obsessed polar bear fans gets bitten or killed trying to get close to their idols, who will get the blame?
The bears, that's who!
Just like we blame celebrities like Woody Harrelson who went ape recently when he mistook a TMZ paparazzo for a zombie chasing him in La Guardia airport.
Which was, frankly, a perfectly natural mistake.

Elizabeth, I disagree that the zoo should take any further measures to make the pen safer from intruders. As you put it yourself, this woman was determined to get into the pen. And why? Who knows. She's lucky she isn't dead. But why should the zoo try to make it completely idiot proof? If you have a whack job like this woman who really desires to get into the pen, don't you think she'll find a way? I suppose is if she wanted to run across the freeway, they would have to build even more protection to keep idiots from doing that.
Fact of the matter is, there are idiots in this world and sometimes you need to let them get what they deserve. I'm not saying that they should have stood by and let the bears kill her. The right thing was done to save her life. However, it could have gone the other way and in my opinion, the zoo bears no fault for this. Unless they create an unsuitable/unsafe evironment (i.e. forgot to close the gate to the tiger's pen, oops!), then why should the zoo or even the bears for that matter be at fault? I'm with the Germans on this one.
I hope this woman is arrested.
She almost won the darwin award... almost.
Go BEARS!!!
It is not possible to legislate Evolution. Further, this incident should point out to the Thinking that interfering with Natural Selection is a bad, expensive pursuit.
It is impossible to guard against chaos.
