Hillary Clinton worried about looking 'too feminine' in Vogue? Hard to imagine

Hillary-clinton-vogue-cover-photo Hillary Clinton graced the cover of Vogue in 1998.

When will our new secretary of state make her next appearance on the cover of Vogue, as First Lady Michelle Obama did?

That might be a cold day in fashion hell. Remember that Hillary snubbed an appearance on the cover of Vogue last year during the presidential race.

A Vogue spokesperson said at the time: "We were told by Ms. Clinton's camp that they were concerned if Clinton appeared in Vogue that she would appear too feminine."

Oh, no worries there, Hillary.

Anna Wintour, Vogue's barb-tongued editrix, was pretty darn peeved at the time and briefly addressed Hillary's Vogue diss in her February editor's letter: "The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying."

Indeed.

What do you think of Hillary's remarks? Could she ever look too feminine? And is looking feminine a bad thing?

Of course she could have looked too feminine, depending on the pictorial selected. Given all the obstacles a female has in seeking the highest office in the land, it goes without saying actually, but, of course looking too feminine would not appear as "Presidential" to most voters, whether consciously or subconsciously. Do you really have to ask this question?!?!

To answer your question, I believe she's fully feminine and she has so much confidence in her self that she does not feel the need to boost her look with the help of professionals. She has her personal style and does not try to emulate any one else or conform to a cliche.

I'm not even sure feminine was really the right word. The word was trivial. Someone running for President shouldn't be posing on the cover of a fashion magazine. I know people like Anna Wintour think their work is just so important but it really isn't.
And Hillary Clinton never looked mannish. She looked terrific.

I believe Hillary is very feminine, she doesn't need to wear dresses to be womanly. She has her own style and she is beautiful.

Too pretty and feminine is not a problem?

Tell that to Sarah Palin.

Hillary has had enough trouble through the years being taken seriously...a Vogue cover during a presidential campaign would NOT have helped her cause! It's not about looking or being too feminine...Anna Wintour needs to get over herself! Perhaps if more women had supported Hillary in her quest, and she was now our President, we would all be enjoying her image on magazine covers!

Definition of "feminine" is subjective. I do think Hillary Clinton is feminine and absolutely womanly. I also think that Hillary's gender--who she is, based on her gender-- was attacked throughout her campaign. She wasn't "allowed" to show too much... once, she wore a lower neckline shirt...showing an indication that that her body continued after her collarbone, and she was slammed for that in the media. She was slammed for expressing feelings. She was slammed for being a fighter. She was roasted for breathing in any way that was outside the norm of what was expected of her as a "woman"---as our society narrowly defines "woman."

I think if Hillary Clinton's people said it was a bad idea to go on the cover of Vogue there was a reason. Probably she cared more about working hard than becoming a celebrity on the cover of such a magazine. We all know that Obama would have said yes to any magazine--and he did. He probably would have done it naked if it meant more money or votes for him. That man sold his soul a long time ago. Playgirl should give him a ring. They might get lucky.

As someone who has had the pleasure of meeting Hillary Clinton in person, face-to-face, there is no doubt that she is a very attractive and feminine woman.

More importantly she is also strong, smart, poised, confident, well informed and entirely capable of serving as the President of the United States.

Unfortunately, Hillary had to be extremely careful about whatever she did in the campaign, because she was held under a microscope by the media, more than any other candidate. I agree that it probably would not have helped her to have appeared on the cover of Vogue at the time.

And I have always thought that she was beautiful, and feminine, and strong, and confident, and fearless, and dedicated - which all adds up to being a fabulous womanly woman and a wonderful role model to the world.
