Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart killed in hit-and-run
Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton early this morning, according to TMZ.
The accident took place just a few hours after he pitched last night, striking out five guys in six scoreless innings.
His performance was hailed by sportswriters as an amazing effort by a 22-year-old right-hander.
The police say a driver of a minivan ran a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart and three others were in to hit a light pole. Three of the four people in the Mitsubishi were killed in the crash -- Nick, another man and a woman. A fourth person remains in the hospital.
TMZ reports that police say the person driving the van fled the scene but was later caught and has been charged with felony hit-and-run.
The suspect is being treated for injuries in a local hospital.
This is such a sad and tragic loss. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow players.
UPDATE: According to LA Now, the cops arrested Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of San Bernardino, on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. Gallo has a prior DUI conviction and his driver's license had been suspended.
After the accident, Gallo allegedly fled on foot. Officers caught him a mile away and took him into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run.
