First lady fashion face-off: Michelle Obama vs. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy!

Ap_obama_bruni_090403_mn First Lady Michelle Obama and French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy finally had their fashion face-off.

Not in London for the G-20 Summit, but at the NATO gathering in Strasbourg today.

Michelle Obama wore a more colorful Thakoon three-quarter-length black mantilla coat with magenta floral designs, with a tie at the neck.

Bruni-Sarkozy, a former international fashion supermodel, donned a more demure, three-quarter flare-sleeved taupe belted suede coat with a large neck bow.

Both women's outfits had big bowed collars. Hmmm. Coincidence?

The former cover girl, who towers over her short husband, diplomatically wore ballerina flats for the occasion.

But Michelle Obama, who even in her usual kitten heels, is a bit taller than her very tall husband, wore kitten heels, rather than flats.

That speaks volumes, doesn't it?

It could mean that the American woman is not afraid to be taller than her mate. And that Barack isn't threatened in the least. And the French woman subjugates her own stature to let her husband stand tallest. And that Sarkozy likes that.

What do you think? Who is the better dressed of the two women? Or do they both kinda fall flat in these frumpy, shapeless outfits?

And how about those low heels?  Should women try not to tower over their high-powered husbands?

michelle - u rock missy! i'm 20 and am so happy seeing u gives me faith that i will look HOT approaching my 50s! thank u so much!

Michelle Obama is great! She is smart and confident no matter what she wears. Love the fact that she takes chances with style.

COCOCOZY

Michelle Obama near jolie (pretty) Carla Bruni, ....i am now more embarassed than i have never been with our worst lady

I think you hit the nail on the head with the heel thing. Michelle and Barack are both secure enough to let Michelle be the taller of the two, and yes, I think the French president has a hang-up about his height. Too bad the French first lady doesn't let herself tower over her husband.

I think the dress was appropriate for both women...but I think Michelle looked more regal. More modern. And more comfortable in her skin. Carla is gorgeous no matter what she wears, but this outfit did very little for her and helped Michelle stand out even more. As for flats vs heels, Michelle towers over everyone so she can't be apologetic for her height.

They both look nice, but I like that Michelle has a little color in her outfit. Bruni-Sarkozy's outfit is kind of stale and boring, but still appropriate.

Well, they are both beautiful. But, if this were Cinderella, then Carla Bruni would win by a landslide.

Michelle vs. Carla? Come on - can you really go into a fashion race with a former supermodel? Carla is toning down her natural glamour and sex appeal a lot for her role as First Lady. And she still looks elegant! Whereas Michelle looks like she's wearing upholstery! Take the fashion lead of a supermodel Michelle: ditch the loud prints and stick with neutrals!

We all know Michelle rocked this. Because the media is so protective of picking a black woman over someone of European dissent, they didn't pick. A lack of them picking Bruni-Sarkozy themselves, says it all.

I find they are both beautiful women . They both look excellent. Smart and Beautiful women!
